Webinar Explores Solutions for Communication in Co-located Renewables
A recent webinar titled “Inside CAN Networks: Solving Core Communication Challenges in Co-located Renewables and BESS” was presented by HMS Networks. The session focused on addressing significant communication challenges faced by renewable energy projects that integrate battery energy storage systems (BESS) with wind and solar sites. As these projects increase in scale and complexity, effective communication remains a critical factor in maximizing their value and operational resilience.
Co-locating BESS with renewable energy sources allows operators to store surplus energy produced during peak generation times. This capability enables them to release the stored energy when production declines or market prices surge. Such strategies not only stabilize the grid but also open new revenue avenues, thereby enhancing the overall performance of renewable energy systems.
Despite these advantages, many co-located projects encounter hidden communication barriers. The integration of large, distributed systems often involves components from various vendors, which must operate cohesively. Controller Area Network (CAN) systems, commonly employed in these setups, frequently suffer from interoperability issues, integration challenges, and unreliable data transmission.
Expert Insights on Overcoming Communication Challenges
During the webinar, experts provided practical solutions to these communication hurdles. Yuan Lee, EMEA Channel Manager at HMS, and Seth Thomas, Americas Sales Director at HMS, shared their insights on developing robust communication infrastructures. Their guidance aims to accelerate project deployments, reduce maintenance costs, and optimize the performance of renewable energy systems.
The session targeted engineers and maintenance technicians who grapple with CAN communication issues in their facilities. Attendees received hands-on strategies to avoid common pitfalls encountered in the planning, installation, and upkeep of renewable energy systems, including BESS, wind power, and smart grid solutions.
Future-Ready Renewable Energy Systems
The webinar emphasized the importance of mastering communication complexity to ensure that renewable energy systems are future-ready. By implementing the recommended practices, participants can better navigate the intricate landscape of co-located renewable energy projects.
For those interested, the webinar is available for viewing, and registration is open to access presentation slides and additional resources on the HMS Networks website. The insights shared during this session are crucial for anyone involved in the renewable energy sector, from planning to execution.
Andy Colthorpe, editor and moderator for the session, guided the discussion, ensuring a thorough exploration of the topics at hand. The growing need for effective communication in the renewable energy landscape underscores the relevance of this webinar, making it a valuable resource for industry professionals.
