Primark has rebranded its Hamilton store as ‘Preemark’ to celebrate its 50-year presence in Scotland. The change, which reflects the pronunciation preferred by many Scottish customers, has been implemented across all 21 Scottish outlets and will last until August 24, 2024. This playful nod to local culture commemorates the retailer’s first store opening in Hamilton in 1975.

The transformation of the Hamilton store, alongside the significant outlets in Edinburgh and Glasgow, features themed window displays and signage highlighting the ‘Preemark’ branding. Gavin O’Reilly, area manager for Primark Scotland West and Cumbria, explained, “Our loyal Scottish shoppers have been instrumental to our success over the last 50 years, so we thought it was high time we acknowledged it in true Primark style.”

Primark initially entered the Scottish market with a bang, attracting large crowds for its opening deals. Back in 1975, customers eagerly lined up for items such as women’s tweed coats priced at £9.50, menswear V-neck Shetland jumpers at £2.85, and children’s slacks for just 99p. The store quickly established itself as a go-to destination for affordable fashion, reflecting the changing tastes and needs of shoppers over the decades.

Expansion and Investment in Scottish Retail

Since its debut, Primark has expanded significantly in Scotland, now operating over 755,000 sq. ft of retail space and employing more than 2,637 staff members across the country. The retailer has invested over £20 million in major refurbishments in recent years, including upgrades in Clydebank, Hamilton, Stirling, and Irvine. Looking ahead, Primark plans to invest an additional £9 million in its Scottish stores over the next two years, underscoring its commitment to the local market.

Kari Rodgers, UK retail director at Primark, noted, “The high streets and fashions have changed a lot over five decades in Scotland, and Primark has been there every step of the way.” She emphasized the brand’s dedication to providing quality clothing at affordable prices, stating, “There is such pride in our stores in Scotland and our customers feel it too.”

Primark’s original Hamilton store, which spans 9,300 sq. ft, paved the way for the chain’s flagship outlet on Edinburgh’s Princes Street, boasting stunning views of Edinburgh Castle and covering 73,900 sq. ft. The company has continually adapted its offerings, now including beauty studios, nail bars, and a variety of dining options, such as popular cafes in Edinburgh and Braehead.

The playful rebranding to ‘Preemark’ also follows a viral moment on social media earlier this year, where the retailer sought to clarify the correct pronunciation of its name. This lighthearted approach has resonated with customers, especially in Scotland, where the name has sparked ongoing discussions about its pronunciation.

As Primark celebrates its milestone anniversary, it remains focused on future growth and customer engagement, ensuring that it stays a beloved fixture on the high streets of Scotland and beyond. With a total of 197 outlets across the UK, the brand continues to solidify its place in the retail landscape, employing around 30,000 individuals nationwide.
