Housing Executive Urged to Remove Paramilitary Murals in NI
The call for action against illegal paramilitary murals on properties owned by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) has intensified. Councillor Peter Lavery has highlighted that there are currently 22 murals of a paramilitary nature located on NIHE properties within the Armagh, Banbridge, and Craigavon Council area.
Councillor Lavery expressed deep concern over the implications of these murals, stating, “Murals and facades of paramilitary groups have no place in society.” He emphasized that such displays foster fear and intimidation within communities, urging the Housing Executive to take immediate steps to remove these images from its premises.
Despite the awareness of these paramilitary symbols, the Housing Executive has reportedly not removed any of them from its properties in the borough over the past year. Lavery criticized this inaction, asserting, “This simply isn’t good enough.” He underscored the desire of local communities to live in peace, free from the influence of these divisive relics.
Community Response and Calls for Action
The presence of these murals has sparked a significant response from residents and community leaders alike. Many in the borough have voiced their frustration, arguing that the existence of such displays is detrimental to community cohesion and wellbeing.
Councillor Lavery reiterated the urgency of the situation, stating, “The sooner these paramilitary relics are thrown in the bin, the better.” His remarks reflect a broader sentiment among residents who seek to move forward without the shadow of past conflicts looming over their daily lives.
The NIHE has been approached for an official response regarding the current status of the murals and their plans for removal. As the situation develops, community members are hopeful for a swift resolution that prioritizes the safety and tranquility of their neighborhoods.
In conclusion, the ongoing dialogue surrounding the removal of paramilitary murals in Armagh, Banbridge, and Craigavon signifies a significant step towards fostering a more peaceful community atmosphere. The actions taken by the NIHE in the coming weeks will be closely monitored by local leaders and residents alike.
