First Minister John Swinney Advocates for Zero Tariffs on Scotch Whisky

First Minister John Swinney met with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office to advocate for a reduction in tariffs on Scotch whisky. The meeting, which took place on October 3, 2023, is part of Swinney’s ongoing trade and political discussions in the United States, where he aims to bolster Scotland’s economic interests.
During the meeting, Swinney emphasized the importance of adopting a “zero-for-zero” approach to tariffs. He stated, “I wanted to share an update on my visit to Washington, DC. I spent the morning with representatives of the whisky industry from Scotland and the United States, and we discussed the zero-for-zero approach on tariffs, which would help the industry to flourish on both sides of the pond.” This strategy aims to eliminate tariffs on both imported and exported whisky, potentially enhancing trade relations between the US and Scotland.
The discussion with Trump focused specifically on how removing tariffs on Scotch whisky could benefit the industry significantly. Swinney remarked, “I’ve now taken those arguments to the Oval Office to President Trump, and we’ve had a constructive discussion about the reasons why Scotch whisky would benefit from no tariffs.” His commitment to advocating for Scotland’s interests was evident throughout their conversation, which lasted approximately 30 minutes. The meeting began at 19:00 UK time.
Prior to engaging with the President, Swinney held discussions with industry representatives at Mount Vernon, the historic estate of George Washington and the site of a whisky distillery established in 1798. There, he met with members of the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (Discus) and the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA). These meetings are crucial as they aim to build alliances and foster understanding of the whisky industry’s importance to both economies.
In his statements, Swinney reiterated his focus on ensuring that Scotland’s economic interests are prioritized in international discussions. He noted, “It’s all part of my job to make sure that Scotland’s interests are promoted at all times, and that’s what I’ll always do as First Minister.” His visit to Washington, DC, which began on October 3, marks a significant effort to press for better tariff arrangements that could enhance the Scotch whisky market in the US.
As discussions around trade tariffs continue, the outcome of these meetings could have lasting impacts on the whisky industry, potentially leading to increased exports and a more favorable business environment for producers in Scotland.
