A cinema in North Wales has undergone a significant transformation, reopening its doors following a £1.3 million upgrade. The Empire Complex, a landmark building in Holyhead, was officially inaugurated on September 19, 2023, by Anna McMorrin, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Wales Office. This investment is part of the Anglesey Council’s broader Town Centre Regeneration programme, aimed at revitalising essential community and cultural assets while stimulating local economic growth.

The refurbishment was funded through a partnership between the UK Government, Anglesey County Council, and Holyhead Town Council. Anna McMorrin emphasized the project’s significance, stating, “It is fantastic to see that our funding for the Empire Complex is already helping to bring more visitors to Holyhead town centre.” She reaffirmed the government’s dedication to community regeneration across Wales.

New Features Enhance Visitor Experience

The cinema now boasts several new attractions, including a state-of-the-art play frame designed to attract families and visitors. A newly constructed rear extension features a modern party room, a kitchen, and facilities such as a private baby-feeding room. Additionally, a new sensory room has been created to provide a calm, inclusive space for individuals and groups.

The upgraded cinema experience includes new seating, a modern sound system, refreshed décor, and a new screen, enhancing the overall atmosphere for film enthusiasts. In line with sustainability efforts, solar panels have also been installed to reduce energy costs.

Holyhead’s Mayor, Cllr Cadi Evanson, praised the redevelopment, declaring, “The Empire Complex is already proving to be a thriving success story for our town. The demand we are seeing here is a clear sign of how important this facility is to the heart of our community.” She highlighted the investment as a step towards securing the future of Holyhead.

A Hub for Community and Economic Growth

The ownership and management of the Empire Complex fall under the purview of Holyhead Town Council, which engaged local construction firm OBR Construction to carry out the upgrades. Cllr Gary Pritchard, Leader of Anglesey Council and Economic Portfolio Holder, remarked, “This investment is a fantastic example of how working in partnership can deliver real benefits for our communities.” He noted that the Empire Complex has quickly established itself as a vibrant hub for local families, businesses, and visitors.

Since its reopening, the Empire Complex has seen a surge in visitor numbers, solidifying its role as a vital community facility and providing a significant boost to the Holyhead town centre economy. The success of the cinema serves as a testament to the importance of investing in local infrastructure and community resources, ensuring that they remain accessible and beneficial to the public.
