Spalding United Set for Historic Homecoming Against Alfreton Town

Spalding United is gearing up for their much-anticipated return to the Sir Halley Stewart ground this Saturday, as they host Alfreton Town in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup. Manager Jimmy Dean aims to translate the team’s impressive away performance into success on home turf, following a challenging period of ground renovations that has seen them play 14 away matches since the pre-season.
Home Game After Extended Absence
With the renovations now completed, Spalding United will play their first home game of the season. Dean expressed confidence in his team, stating, “We’ve averaged two points from each league game and had some really difficult matches at the likes of Real Bedford, Harborough and Kettering.” He highlighted the team’s resilience, especially given the challenges they faced, including injuries that sidelined a whole back four and two goalkeepers, along with key player Curtis Thompson not yet starting a game.
Alfreton Town, currently struggling in the lower ranks of the National League North, will arrive with a new manager following the departure of Billy Heath. Dean recognizes the potential challenge, noting, “It will be a tough game. They had a good draw against King’s Lynn last Saturday under a new manager, so it will be an exceptionally difficult fixture.” He acknowledged that the matchup would be closely contested, stating, “It’s a 50/50 game against a side who have always done well in the league above.”
Building on Past Matches
The two teams faced off at the same stage of the competition last season, where Alfreton prevailed in a penalty shootout during a replay. Reflecting on that match, Dean remarked, “We had to crowd the box last season and then try and nick one when we could, which probably suited how we had to play against them in that moment.” He emphasized the progress his team has made since then, indicating that this match will carry a different dynamic. “There will be a little bit more pressure on us to have a go at them, which might suit them better.”
Despite the challenges, Dean remains optimistic about the support from fans, saying, “We’re at home though and we want to be well supported because we want fans to keep coming back. The fans have been great, but we want to try and keep building this club as we keep moving forward.” He also praised the contributions of volunteers, emphasizing the importance of delivering strong performances to show gratitude for their support.
In preparation for the match, Spalding has recently made strategic additions, including the signing of Paul Jones, a former goalkeeper for Peterborough United, who has stepped in to replace Aaron Chapman. Dean noted, “Paul’s an experienced goalkeeper and there’s a lot of quality there. He’s very professional and is doing a good job for us.” Additionally, the club secured Alex Roberts, a young talent with a promising future, previously associated with Norwich City.
Dean described Roberts as a player with “loads of potential,” highlighting his speed and ability to beat defenders. “He is still young though but will have some success with us over the course of the season,” Dean added. Roberts showcased his abilities last weekend, scoring and earning man of the match honors while playing for Grantham Town, a testament to his readiness for a more prominent role.
As Spalding United prepares for this crucial match, the blend of home advantage, strategic signings, and a passionate fan base may very well set the stage for an exciting encounter against Alfreton Town. The match promises to be a significant moment in the season, with both teams eager to secure a place in the next round of the FA Cup.
