British Law Student’s GoFundMe Removed Amid Dubai Prison Case

A fundraising campaign launched for a British law student imprisoned in Dubai has been removed from GoFundMe for violating the platform’s guidelines. The page aimed to support Mia O’Brien, 23, who is currently serving a life sentence in the UAE city’s Central Prison. Her family describes her situation as a result of “a very stupid mistake” involving bad influences.
Mia’s mother, Danielle McKenna, 46, expressed her concerns on the now-deleted page, stating she had not seen Mia since October. Danielle emphasized her daughter’s character, asserting that Mia “has never done a bad thing in her life” before her conviction. The specifics of Mia’s charges remain unclear, but sentences in the Emirates for serious crimes can range from 15 to 25 years, with life sentences being common for particularly severe offenses.
Danielle set a fundraising goal of £1,600 to cover legal fees and travel costs for family visits. Before its removal, the campaign had raised just under £700. In her appeal, Danielle wrote, “This is a young girl who went to university to do law and unfortunately got mixed up in the wrong so-called friends.” She urged potential donors to contribute whatever they could, emphasizing the emotional toll on the family.
The removal of the fundraiser follows a statement from a GoFundMe spokesperson, who explained that it was taken down for violating Term 9 of the Prohibited Conduct section in the platform’s Terms of Service. This term specifically prohibits fundraising for the legal defense of certain alleged crimes, which may include serious offenses such as violence or financial crimes.
According to the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), British citizens traveling to the UAE are warned to adhere strictly to local laws. The FCDO highlights a zero-tolerance policy towards drug-related offenses, although it has not confirmed whether drugs were involved in Mia’s case. The website warns that sentences for drug trafficking can lead to severe penalties, including the death penalty.
Danielle’s heartfelt message included her feelings of devastation, stating, “As her mother, I am absolutely devastated. I haven’t seen my daughter since last October.” The FCDO has confirmed they are providing support to the family and are in contact with local authorities regarding Mia’s situation.
As the family navigates this difficult time, the abrupt removal of their fundraising page adds another layer of complexity to an already challenging situation.
