Harrisburg University has officially canceled its HUE Invitational for 2025, a significant esports event that had gained popularity since its inception. In a statement provided to *PennLive*, Harrisburg University described the move as a temporary pause rather than a complete cancellation. The university emphasized that, like many nonprofit institutions, it continuously evaluates its programs to ensure efficiency and effectiveness. “The HUE Invitational is on hold for 2025 to ensure we can continue to deliver this event at the level our students and partners have come to expect,” the statement read. The university hopes to revisit the event in 2026, potentially expanding sponsorship and partnership opportunities to reach a wider audience.

Challenges have been mounting for Harrisburg University in recent years. A decline in student enrollment and financial mismanagement have contributed to a significant operational strain. Reports indicate that Harrisburg University allocated approximately $852,120 for all expenses related to the Harrisburg Storm esports program in the 2023-24 fiscal year. Major expenditures included $291,413 for coaching salaries, $180,830 for student aid, and $138,185 for facility rentals.

While the exact costs associated with the invitational were not disclosed, the university has indicated its commitment to the Harrisburg Storm program, which remains the sole intercollegiate sport at the institution. The absence of the HUE Invitational reflects an ongoing shift at Harrisburg University, which has faced challenges in recent years.

Despite these setbacks, President Daivd Schankweiler remains optimistic about the university’s future. In a March interview with *PennLive*, he expressed hopes for recovery, citing new initiatives such as a planned launch in January and the growth of a recently established advanced manufacturing program that integrates traditional manufacturing with robotics and digital technologies.
