Southern League Premier Central: Teams Adjust After Promotion and Relegation
Last season, Stratford Town narrowly missed out on a play-off position in the Southern League Premier Central, finishing in eighth place. As they embarked on the new campaign, the club made several key signings, including Harry Landers from Leamington, yet they have struggled to find their rhythm early on. With familiar faces and a mix of newcomers, Stratford now faces teams like Needham Market, recently relegated from a higher division, and Quorn FC, who are eager to make their mark.
While Stratford Town did not achieve promotion to the National League North/South, they will not contend with champions Bedford Town, who have moved up to a higher tier this season. Other promoted teams include AFC Telford, who secured their place by defeating Kettering in the play-off final. The Southern League also witnessed the relegation of Lowestoft Town, Hitchin Town, and Biggleswade Town, with Biggleswade finishing 18 points adrift of safety.
Assessing the Relegated Teams
The performance of the relegated teams in their new leagues has varied significantly.
Bedford Town has faced challenges since their promotion to the National League North. Early assessments positioned them as second favorites for relegation, a common expectation for newly promoted teams. Their season has included a disappointing exit from the FA Cup against Dagenham and Redbridge, alongside losses to AFC Fylde and Southport. Their only victory came against fellow newcomers AFC Telford in mid-August. Although they have managed to score in seven of their first eight matches, maintaining defensive solidity has been a struggle. Notably, former Boreham Wood and Macclesfield striker Tyrone Marsh has made an impact, netting six goals so far. Upcoming matches against Buxton and Oxford City present potential opportunities for points.
Similarly, AFC Telford began the season facing skepticism from bookmakers. Following their loss to Bedford Town, they bounced back with a commendable 2-2 draw at Darlington, followed by two consecutive home wins. Under the guidance of manager Kevin Wilkin, they have managed to create a cushion between themselves and the relegation zone. Their late-game fitness has been crucial, with half of their goals scored in the final thirty minutes of matches.
The Impact of Relegation on Other Teams
The remaining relegated teams have encountered mixed fortunes in their new leagues. Lowestoft Town features a young squad that is still adjusting to the Isthmian League. After seven matches, they sit in ninth place with only two wins. However, they remain unbeaten away from home, having recently drawn 2-2 with Gorleston, a mid-table rival. The team must improve its home performance to reclaim its spot in the Southern League Premier Central.
Hitchin Town has had a reasonable start, despite an early exit from the FA Cup against St. Albans City. Their progress in the FA Trophy, highlighted by a 3-1 victory over Biggleswade Town, offers a glimmer of hope. With only four league matches played thus far, the Canaries have won two and lost one, maintaining a solid position in the standings.
In contrast, Biggleswade Town has had a more challenging time. They were eliminated from both the FA Trophy and FA Cup early on, facing defeats from Hitchin Town and Enfield Town, respectively. Nonetheless, they remain unbeaten in their league fixtures, claiming three wins from four matches, with their only points dropped in a hard-fought draw against local rivals.
As the season progresses, teams like Stratford Town and those who have recently faced promotion or relegation will continue to navigate the challenges of their respective leagues, striving for stability and success in the competitive landscape of non-league football.
