Kano Governor Champions Cultural Heritage with Durbar Festival
Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has called on all Emirs in the state to uphold the annual Durbar festival, a traditional horse-riding event, as part of efforts to preserve the region’s cultural heritage. This directive was issued during the opening ceremony of the local Durbar, known as Kanfest (Kalankuwa) 2025, held in Kano on September 30, 2023.
Governor Yusuf emphasized the importance of investing in the promotion of arts, culture, and tourism as essential tools for fostering social cohesion, engaging youth, and diversifying the economy. His administration is committed to supporting the Emirates to ensure that this centuries-old tradition of horsemanship is not only preserved but also showcased on a global stage.
Support for Cultural Revival
In his address, the Emir of Kano and Chairman of the State Council of Emirates, Dr. Muhammadu Sanusi II, expressed gratitude for the Kano State Government’s initiative to revive and restore the valuable traditions of the Kano people. This appreciation highlights the collaborative effort between traditional leaders and the government in promoting cultural heritage.
According to the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, the three-day event will feature a variety of cultural exhibitions and local cuisine. Attendees can expect performances, traditional games, drama, crafts, fabrics, pottery, and presentations from experts in the field. This diverse programming aims to attract a wide array of participants, including traditional title holders, members of the diplomatic corps, artisans, cultural groups, investors, youth, and artists, all of whom play a significant role in the culture and tourism industry.
Governor Yusuf’s efforts underline a broader strategy to leverage cultural events like the Durbar festival as a means of economic enhancement and community engagement. By fostering an environment where cultural heritage can flourish, the government hopes to create a vibrant atmosphere that benefits all stakeholders involved.
As the festivities unfold, Kano stands poised to reaffirm its identity and heritage through the enduring legacy of the Durbar festival, a celebration that not only honors the past but also paves the way for future generations.
