Zarah Sultana and Jeremy Corbyn Reunite to Lead New Party

Zarah Sultana has announced that she and former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn have resolved their recent tensions and will co-lead a new left-wing political party, informally known as Your Party. Speaking at The World Transformed festival in Manchester, Sultana expressed confidence in their ability to collaborate, likening their relationship to that of rock stars Liam and Noel Gallagher.
“Obviously, you’ve all seen what’s happened over the past few weeks, but I’m here to tell you the show is back on the road,” Sultana, the independent MP for Coventry South, stated during her joint appearance with Corbyn. She added, “If they can do it, of course me and Jeremy can.” Sultana humorously remarked on their differences, noting that “the only difference between us is that Jeremy still thinks Arsenal are going to win the Premier League, and we know that they will always come second place with a second-place trophy.”
The status of this new party had been uncertain following a public fallout between Sultana and Corbyn. Tensions peaked last month when Sultana disclosed that she had consulted with defamation lawyers after a dispute regarding the establishment of a paid membership system for the party. This system had been criticized by Corbyn, who described it as a “false membership system” that collected funds and data without proper authorization. He reported the matter to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
In a counterstatement, Sultana accused Corbyn and a group of four pro-Gaza independent MPs of creating a “sexist boys’ club” that excluded her from discussions about the new party. Despite this, she later withdrew her threat of legal action and indicated a willingness to reconcile with Corbyn.
A subsequent video message from Corbyn—with a reach of approximately 750,000 people—apologized for the situation without directly referencing Sultana. In the video, she appeared briefly, indicating a desire for unity moving forward.
Political Landscape and Future Aspirations
The World Transformed festival, which has traditionally coincided with the Labour Party conference, took place this year shortly after Labour’s own gathering in Manchester. Alongside Sultana and Corbyn, Zack Polanski, the new leader of the Greens, also attended. Polanski has previously suggested that the Greens will challenge Labour, criticizing current Labour leader Keir Starmer for allegedly enabling right-wing politics.
During the festival, Sultana criticized prominent political figures, specifically targeting Nigel Farage. She accused him of “peddling racism” to divert attention from more pressing issues, stating, “The truth is, Reform is just another wing of the political establishment.” Sultana characterized the group as being funded by wealthy individuals and claimed that their agenda prioritizes the interests of the affluent over the general public.
She emphasized that Farage’s tactics serve to distract from “more privatisation, more deregulation, more handouts for the rich, more cuts for everyone else.” This sentiment reflects the broader concerns within left-wing circles regarding the direction of UK politics and the need for solidarity among progressive factions.
As Sultana and Corbyn embark on this new chapter in their political journey, the effectiveness of their collaboration will likely play a crucial role in shaping the future of leftist politics in the UK.
