Montenegro’s Kaluđerović Calls for Accountability After Boskovic Arrest

Slađana Kaluđerović, the Deputy President of the Socialist People’s Party (SNP) and a member of Montenegro’s Parliament, has made a strong statement regarding the recent arrest of former Defence Minister Predrag Boskovic. She emphasized that no one should be shielded by their previous positions or party affiliations when facing allegations of wrongdoing.
In her remarks following Boskovic’s arrest, Kaluđerović asserted that if there are suspicions of criminal activities, institutions are obligated to act without political considerations. She stated, “Boskovic must answer questions that have remained unanswered for years, but not in front of cameras and party gatherings, rather before the prosecution and the court.”
Kaluđerović maintained that the arrest should not be viewed as political persecution, as claimed by the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS). Instead, she characterized it as a necessary consequence of the long-standing misuse of state resources and the arrogance that marked their governance. She indicated that accountability is crucial, stating, “Those who have used the state as a personal ATM for years are now trying to present themselves as victims, but the citizens of Montenegro no longer believe them.”
She further expressed that the institutions are finally performing their duties without interference from party leadership or coercive tactics. “The DPS no longer has the political or moral credibility to lecture others on democracy and justice,” Kaluđerović remarked. She dismissed their narrative of “persecution of dissenters” as outdated and ineffective.
Kaluđerović highlighted the importance of accountability for politicians, asserting, “No one escapes responsibility simply because they are a politician—responsibility is greater, not lesser.” The SNP firmly supports the judicial authorities and expects thorough investigations into every case, regardless of the prominence of those implicated. “The time for political protection of illegal actions and crime is over,” she concluded.
This statement comes as Montenegro grapples with its political climate, where allegations of corruption have become increasingly prevalent. Kaluđerović’s comments reflect a growing demand for transparency and accountability among public officials in the country.
