Survey Reveals Poor Toilet Conditions Drive Brits Away from Venues

A recent survey conducted by hygiene brand Tork has revealed alarming findings regarding public toilet conditions in the United Kingdom. The study, which polled 1,000 UK adults, found that many users encounter facilities that are dirty, lack essential supplies such as hand soap and toilet paper, or are plagued by unpleasant odours and spills. Only 17% of washrooms consistently meet basic hygiene standards, according to the research.
The investigation, which included responses from 11,500 individuals across 11 nations, highlighted that 23% of Britons have shortened their visits to cultural or entertainment venues due to the poor state of the toilets. This trend illustrates how inadequate facilities can affect overall attendance and experience at these locations.
Impact on Visitors and Businesses
Olivia Slater, representative of Essity, the company behind Tork washroom products, noted the significant implications of these findings. “These figures are even higher for those with certain physical or cognitive conditions,” she stated. “While wheelchair users and those who are pregnant are especially concerned, there is also considerable worry among individuals living with less visible conditions.”
Slater emphasized that when a washroom fails to meet diverse needs, it directly impacts a business’s reputation and revenue. “This is one reason why ‘hygiene for all’ is a core pillar of our sustainability strategy,” she added. By focusing on inclusive hygiene, businesses can create better experiences for all visitors, including the cleaning staff who maintain these essential spaces.
The survey also documented that 15% of respondents have avoided returning to a cultural or entertainment venue following a negative experience with its facilities. In addition, 30% have reduced their time spent in these venues. Concerns surrounding hygiene have also led 17% to steer clear of food and drink options, which are crucial revenue sources for such establishments.
Public Sentiment and Hygiene Standards
The findings indicate that substandard toilet conditions leave 26% of users feeling frustrated, while 13% report feelings of anxiety or stress associated with using these facilities. Many individuals attempt to avoid touching items or surfaces in toilets at entertainment or cultural venues, with 24% actively seeking to dodge contact. Approximately 11% of respondents refuse to enter if others are present, highlighting the need for improved hygiene standards.
Further concerns focus on what users perceive as neglected areas, with 44% citing toilet bowl hygiene as a primary issue and 39% highlighting the importance of ensuring hand soap is adequately stocked. Additionally, 40% of participants expressed worries about sufficient ventilation, while 41% observed overflowing rubbish bins without regular emptying.
Slater concluded by asserting that clean and sanitary toilets are not merely a public health concern but also a reflection of an organization’s value towards its people and visitors. “Inclusive hygiene is about more than just cleanliness,” she stated. “It ensures everyone, regardless of ability or circumstance, has comfortable access to essential hygiene in what is often one of the busiest spaces in an establishment.”
The study underscores the need for businesses, particularly those in the cultural and entertainment sectors, to prioritize hygiene and inclusivity in their facilities.
