Sir Jim Ratcliffe Backs Ruben Amorim Amid Manchester United Struggles

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United, has reaffirmed his support for under-pressure head coach Ruben Amorim, despite a challenging start to the season. Amorim, who took charge of the club last year, has faced significant criticism, with United finishing 15th in the Premier League last season—their lowest position in 50 years. Ratcliffe, who oversees football operations, emphasized that he will allow Amorim time to prove himself, stating that the coach deserves a fair assessment over the duration of his three-year contract.
In a recent interview on the Business podcast, Ratcliffe described Amorim as a “good guy” and remarked, “He has not had the best of seasons.” The co-owner highlighted the importance of patience in football, referencing the struggles of other managers, such as Mikel Arteta, who faced difficulties early in his tenure at Arsenal. Ratcliffe’s comments signal a commitment to supporting Amorim as he works to turn around the club’s fortunes.
Last season, Manchester United’s performance was disappointing, as they secured only 37 points from a possible 102 and failed to qualify for European competition for the second time in 35 years. Despite these challenges, Amorim managed a crucial 2-0 victory over Sunderland, lifting the team to 10th in the standings.
Ratcliffe addressed speculation regarding the potential for Amorim’s dismissal, particularly if the majority owners, the Glazer family, were to suggest such a move. He firmly dismissed the idea, stating, “It’s not going to happen.” This response reinforces his commitment to allowing Amorim the opportunity to establish his coaching credentials.
As Manchester United navigates a period of transition, the club’s leadership remains focused on building a competitive team for the future. Ratcliffe’s backing of Amorim may provide some stability in what has been a tumultuous time for the club and its supporters. The full interview with Ratcliffe is available on the Business podcast.
