Scott McTominay Celebrates Harry Maguire After United’s Win
Manchester United secured a thrilling 2-1 victory against Liverpool at Anfield, and the occasion was marked by notable reactions from former players. Scott McTominay, currently playing for Napoli, expressed his support for Harry Maguire through a heartfelt message on social media. Shortly after the match, Maguire celebrated the win with a post on Instagram that garnered over 150,000 likes within an hour.
In his post, Maguire shared a series of images from the game, captioned simply, “I love this club” alongside a red heart emoji. Among the thousands of fans who commented, McTominay’s message stood out. The former Manchester United midfielder, who transferred to Napoli in August 2024 for £25 million, responded with clapping hands and a red heart emoji, earning the most ‘likes’ for a comment on Maguire’s post, surpassing tributes from players such as Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee.
McTominay’s Loyalty to United
Speaking to the Mirror in July 2025, McTominay reflected on his time at Manchester United, asserting that he harbors no ill feelings towards the club. “I always want the absolute best for Manchester United,” he stated. “It’s been my life for 22, 23 years, so for me, I wish the club all the success in the world. I’m with them every step of the way. I want them to do well.”
During his time at Napoli, McTominay has made a significant impact, helping the team win the Scudetto last season with 12 goals and six assists. His performance earned him the Player of the Season award, an honor previously held by football legends like Cristiano Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane.
The decision by Manchester United to allow McTominay’s departure raised eyebrows among fans and analysts alike. Benni McCarthy, a former coach at United, described the transfer as “one of the biggest mistakes in football.” He explained, “When they go, the profit lets you sign more players. Having said that, it was one of the biggest mistakes in football to let him leave. He was born to play for United.”
Criticism of McTominay’s Transfer
McCarthy emphasized the qualities that made McTominay a valuable player for United, noting his determination and spirit. “Scotty was a player that you look for in a dressing room to get you where you want to be,” he said. “To let him go for what was a small transfer fee was a big shame. I think everyone at the club regrets that decision.”
Former United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also criticized the move, stating, “Scott and Fred together, they were lads you would put your hat on every day to give 100 percent. How you can sell Scott is beyond me.”
McTominay’s journey from Manchester United to Napoli continues to resonate within the football community, as both fans and former teammates reflect on his contributions to the club and the impact of his departure. As McTominay thrives in Italy, his sentiments toward Manchester United remain steadfast, showcasing a loyalty that remains strong despite the change in his career path.
