Nicola McLean Criticizes Big Brother’s New Approach to Fun

Big Brother icon Nicola McLean has expressed her discontent with the show’s latest direction, particularly regarding the restrictions on housemates’ alcohol consumption. In a recent interview with the Daily Star, McLean criticized the new policy that limits contestants to just two alcoholic drinks per night, claiming it has stripped the show of its signature excitement and unpredictability.
During her candid discussion, McLean stated, “I think I’ve lived unapologetically myself. Maybe I wouldn’t get as drunk on Big Brother as I did, but you know what? It was f****** fun at the time.” The 44-year-old former glamour model, who gained fame on both Celebrity Big Brother and I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, believes that the producers’ cautious approach to avoid controversy has ultimately harmed the show’s appeal.
Concerns Over Diminished Thrill
McLean lamented, “It’s such a shame they’ve capped the drinks. It really has killed it. You know, this sensible drinking is really boring.” She argues that the previous format allowed for genuine interactions, messy moments, and unfiltered personalities, which captivated audiences. “Back in the day, it was about being yourself, having fun, and letting things happen naturally. Now it feels like everyone’s walking on eggshells,” she noted.
Having participated in Celebrity Big Brother in 2012 and 2017, along with a guest appearance during a shopping task in the regular Big Brother series in 2018, McLean reflected on her experiences. She emphasized that despite any wild antics, she cherishes her time in the house. “I had the best time. It was real, it was honest, and people loved it for that,” she said.
The current reboot of Big Brother has received praise for being more inclusive and mindful, yet McLean believes it has lost the edge that made the show iconic. Viewers have come to expect an element of chaos, which she feels has been dampened by the new rules.
The Evolution of Reality Television
As reality television continues to evolve, McLean’s comments highlight a growing concern among fans and former contestants. The balance between maintaining entertainment value and ensuring a controlled environment is a delicate one. While the show’s producers aim to create a safer atmosphere, McLean argues that it should not come at the expense of the fun and spontaneity that first drew audiences to Big Brother.
With new episodes airing from Sunday to Friday at 21:00, the series still captures a loyal following. Whether it can regain the unpredictability and excitement of its earlier seasons remains to be seen. For now, fans and former participants alike continue to weigh in on the show’s direction, eager to see how it adapts in the future.
