Mother and Sons Banned for Cruelty After Dogs Found in Cages
Three individuals from Poulton-le-Fylde have received significant bans from animal ownership following a shocking case of cruelty involving their dogs. Michelle Wilding (58), Christopher Wilding (40), and Jack Wilding (29) were found guilty of neglecting their dogs, who were discovered crammed into filthy, cramped cages without adequate food, water, or veterinary care.
The investigation was led by the RSPCA, which revealed that the dogs were kept in appalling conditions, some for as long as 18 hours a day. Reports indicate that the cages were stacked on top of one another, with the stench of ammonia so overpowering that it burned the inspectors’ throats and noses. The RSPCA described finding dogs in spaces so small they could not even stand up or turn around.
Disturbing Conditions Uncovered by Inspectors
During visits to the Wildings’ residence, RSPCA inspectors witnessed multiple violations of animal welfare standards. In January 2021, inspectors first alerted Michelle Wilding to the unsuitable housing conditions for her dogs. By February, Christopher Wilding admitted to inspectors that the dogs were confined in small cages for extended hours. One inspector noted that temperatures in the kennels dropped as low as 3 degrees Celsius, making it an inhospitable environment for the animals.
The situation deteriorated further, with inspectors finding piles of rubbish, including bags filled with dog excrement, adjacent to the cages. Dogs displayed severe stress, with some spinning in circles or chewing on the metal bars of their enclosures. Others were too weak or frightened to walk when assessed by the RSPCA.
The RSPCA’s evidence revealed that many dogs suffered from significant health issues, such as dental disease and untreated infections. A veterinarian’s report indicated that 12 dogs were in poor physical condition, with several suffering from heart murmurs, eye and ear infections, and inadequate nutrition.
Legal Consequences for Animal Cruelty
On July 22, 2023, the Lancaster Magistrates Court imposed severe penalties on the Wildings. Both Michelle and Christopher Wilding received a 15-year ban on animal ownership, along with suspended jail sentences of 27 weeks. They were also required to pay a £187 victim surcharge. Jack Wilding faced a ten-year ban and a fine of £270 plus a £108 victim surcharge.
Throughout the trial, the defendants claimed they were overwhelmed and unable to provide proper care for the dogs. Michelle Wilding argued that she did not intend to harm the animals and was simply unaware of their health issues. Christopher Wilding mentioned feeling exploited by his mother’s decisions regarding the dogs.
Following the court’s ruling, RSPCA Inspector Will Lamping expressed relief that the dogs had been rescued from such dire conditions. He emphasized that these animals had endured unnecessary suffering, confined in small spaces without basic needs met. The RSPCA is now focusing on rehoming the dogs found at the Wilding residence, ensuring they receive the veterinary care required to recover fully.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of animal welfare and the legal consequences of neglect. The RSPCA continues its mission to advocate for animals and ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future.
