King Charles III has announced that his cancer treatment will be reduced starting in the New Year, nearly two years after his diagnosis. The 77-year-old monarch has been receiving weekly treatment since discovering he had an unspecified form of cancer in early 2024. In a recent address to the nation, the King highlighted the importance of cancer screening programs in facilitating early detection of the disease.

The message, filmed in the morning room at Clarence House, aired on Channel 4 as part of its Stand Up To Cancer initiative. This campaign included a series of fundraising activities aimed at raising awareness about cancer screening and supporting those affected by the illness.

In his statement, Charles expressed optimism, stating, “Today I am able to share with you the good news that thanks to early diagnosis, effective intervention, and adherence to doctors’ orders, my own schedule of cancer treatment can be reduced in the New Year.” He noted that this milestone represents both a personal achievement and a reflection of the significant advancements in cancer care over recent years. The King remarked, “I hope this may give encouragement to the fifty percent of us who will be diagnosed with the illness at some point in our lives.”

With a Stand Up To Cancer lapel pin visible, Charles spoke candidly about the emotional toll of a cancer diagnosis. He emphasized the alarming statistic that at least nine million people in the UK are not up to date with available cancer screenings. “That is at least nine million opportunities for early diagnosis being missed,” he pointed out.

The King acknowledged that many individuals avoid screening due to fears of discomfort or embarrassment. He urged people to reconsider, stating, “A few moments of minor inconvenience are a small price to pay for the reassurance that comes for most people when they are either told they don’t need further tests, or, for some, are given the chance to enable early detection, with the life-saving intervention that can follow.”

This year’s Stand Up To Cancer campaign coincided with the launch of a new online screening tool, screeningchecker.co.uk. This resource helps individuals identify which cancer screening programs they may be eligible for. Charles expressed his encouragement about the tool, stating, “This simple tool allows you to check whether you are eligible for breast, bowel, or cervical cancer screening. It demystifies the process, answers your questions, and guides you towards taking that crucial step.”

The public became aware of Charles’ cancer diagnosis on February 6, 2023. He had previously postponed public engagements following his diagnosis, which was discovered during a hospital procedure for an enlarged prostate. The specific type of cancer has not been disclosed, but he has been undergoing treatment since then.

A spokesperson from Buckingham Palace confirmed that the King has responded exceptionally well to treatment. They stated that ongoing measures will now transition into a precautionary phase, which will be continuously monitored to prioritize his recovery. The spokesperson added, “As The King has said, this milestone on his recovery journey is a great personal blessing.”

The King has continued to fulfill his official duties throughout his treatment, including international visits to Australia and Samoa. Despite facing a brief hospitalization in March due to temporary side effects from his treatment, he has maintained a full schedule of public engagements. The Palace spokesperson noted that this active lifestyle has been beneficial for his recovery.

Michelle Mitchell, Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK, expressed gratitude to the King for his support of the Stand Up To Cancer initiative. She stated, “We know that when public figures speak openly about their cancer diagnosis, it can prompt others to check in on their health and speak to a GP if something is worrying them.” Mitchell underscored the significance of early detection and the ongoing issue of missed screenings, saying, “Spotting cancer early can make a real difference and provides the best chance for successful treatment.”

As the King continues his journey toward recovery, he extends his best wishes to all those affected by cancer, keeping them and their families in his thoughts and prayers.
