Guardiola Pledges Long-Term Commitment to Manchester City
Pep Guardiola has expressed his desire to remain at Manchester City for as long as possible, dismissing speculation regarding an early departure from his contract. The Catalan manager, whose current deal runs for another 18 months, indicated that he could still be at the club as late as the 2027/28 season.
Guardiola’s comments come amidst a competitive Premier League season where Manchester City sits just two points behind league leaders Arsenal. The manager emphasized the importance of continuous improvement, both individually and as a team, stating, “The team that grows through the season will win the Premier League.”
The City boss acknowledged that he has achieved significant success, having “done everything” in terms of winning titles. Yet, he remains energized by the day-to-day interactions with his players. “Last season was a really, really tough season and I didn’t give up,” he noted. “This season is much better in terms of many things I’m seeing and still I’m here. It depends on my feelings. My feeling right now is good, that’s why I want to continue.”
Reflecting on his tenure, Guardiola mentioned a principle he established upon his arrival at the Etihad Stadium in 2016: he would step down when he could no longer motivate his squad. This philosophy, rather than a tally of trophies or external pressures, will guide his eventual departure.
While Guardiola has previously indicated a desire for a break after leaving City and has shown interest in international coaching opportunities, he is currently focused on the challenges of rebuilding the team. The integration of new players such as Rayan Cherki, Nico Gonzalez, and Nico O’Reilly has provided fresh motivation. He believes there is still significant potential to unlock within the squad.
“Of course I want to win the Premier League and the Champions League, but that is not the reason why I wake up in the morning,” Guardiola explained. “It’s the process, the journey. Do it better.” He highlighted the importance of maintaining focus on development rather than solely on accolades.
Guardiola acknowledged the improvements seen in recent matches but noted areas that still require work. “Still our build-up is not good, not good. We can play better, have more courage to play,” he stated. He also pointed out that the team has become more effective in front of goal, with contributions coming from multiple players rather than relying solely on star striker Erling Haaland.
As Manchester City prepares for the remainder of the season, Guardiola’s commitment to nurturing talent and pursuing excellence remains steadfast. He aims to continue pushing the team towards greater achievements, ensuring that both players and fans share in the excitement of the journey ahead.
