A 39-year-old man from Gloucester has been charged following an incident on September 17, 2023, in which a police officer was shot in the leg. Justin Francis, of Chequers Road, faces multiple charges, including grievous bodily harm with intent to resist arrest, conspiracy to commit robbery, and possession of a bladed article in a public place.

The shooting occurred around 16:40 local time on Silverstone Walk, shortly after a report came in about a taxi driver being held at knifepoint by two individuals in Valley Gardens. The assailants fled the scene with cash and jewelry, while the taxi driver, a man in his 40s, was unharmed.

Two additional suspects have also been charged in connection with the robbery. Wayne Vaughan, aged 37, and Tiffany Davies, aged 35, both face the same conspiracy to commit robbery charge. At this time, all three suspects remain in police custody and are set to appear at Cheltenham Magistrates’ Court later today, September 19, 2023.

Community Response to Incident

Superintendent Mark Chicken expressed concern for the injured officer and thanked the local community for their understanding and support. “The thoughts of everyone at the Constabulary remain with the injured officer as he continues to receive treatment in hospital,” he stated. He acknowledged the rarity of such incidents in Gloucestershire, noting that it may cause alarm among residents.

Superintendent Chicken assured the public that neighborhood officers would continue their patrols to offer reassurance. He encouraged anyone with concerns to engage with these officers, emphasizing the need for community communication in light of recent events.

A statement from Gloucestershire Constabulary confirmed the charges against Francis, detailing the circumstances of the shooting and the associated robbery. The statement reiterated the severity of the situation, highlighting the potential dangers faced by law enforcement in the line of duty.

As the investigation progresses, local authorities remain vigilant. They aim to maintain public safety while addressing any community apprehensions stemming from this incident.
