The mysterious depths of Poganica Cave in Croatia’s Adriatic Sea became the site of tragedy on September 10, 2002, when a diver, known only as M. K., lost his life during a dive. What initially appeared to be a routine exploration turned into a chilling incident that has left both the local community and investigators grappling with unanswered questions.

Situated near the small island of Šolta, Poganica Bay is known for its secluded beauty, attracting divers and adventure seekers. On that fateful evening, M. K. and several friends embarked on a sailing trip, which included diving into the waters around 9:15 PM. Equipped with a 15-litre air cylinder and a dive computer, he began his descent into the bay, drawn by the cave’s intriguing entrance.

The cave descends to a depth of 15 meters, branching out into two distinct paths. M. K. chose the perilous route that plunged into the abyss, unaware of the potential dangers that lay ahead. The cavern, lined with fine silt, could quickly transform clear waters into a thick, impenetrable fog if disturbed. As he continued deeper, the minutes slipped away, and his air supply dwindled, leaving him with insufficient resources for a safe return.

Around 10:30 PM, concerns grew among M. K.’s friends when he failed to resurface. A search commenced, but the complex underwater labyrinth offered no clues. By 11:41 PM, after exhausting his air supply, the urgency escalated, prompting an emergency call to authorities in Split. Rescue divers were dispatched at dawn, but their mission soon turned tragic when one officer drowned while searching for M. K.

The search team eventually located the body of the missing police diver and, tragically, M. K. himself at a depth of 54 meters. He was still in his diving gear, but the circumstances surrounding his death were alarming. A knife was found embedded in his chest, and his regulator was torn from his mouth. This gruesome discovery led investigators to initially treat the scene as a potential crime scene, raising questions about whether foul play was involved.

A thorough forensic investigation followed, examining every piece of equipment M. K. had used. Two crew members were taken into custody as authorities sought to determine the truth behind the incident. The findings revealed that M. K. had a history of 37 previous dives, indicating a level of experience that made the circumstances of his death all the more puzzling.

The post-mortem examination disclosed an 11-centimetre stab wound that had punctured M. K.’s aorta, confirming he had drowned shortly after the injury. Although his blood alcohol level exceeded the legal driving limit, it was unclear whether it had impaired his ability to dive. Investigators considered various scenarios, including the possibility of murder, but ultimately concluded that the diver’s death was a suicide, driven by panic in a dire situation.

The tragic events at Poganica Cave serve as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with scuba diving and the unpredictable nature of underwater environments. As the local community mourns the loss of M. K. and the police diver, the incident continues to prompt discussions about safety measures and the challenges faced by divers exploring such treacherous underwater labyrinths.
