Carlos Forbs Aims for Champions League Success After Ajax Exit

Carlos Forbs is determined to make his mark in the Champions League after a tumultuous journey through several clubs. The Portuguese winger, previously part of Manchester City’s academy, transferred to Ajax for £17.3 million in 2023 but faced challenges that have led him to a new chapter at Club Brugge.
Forbs, known as Carlos Borges during his time at Manchester City, showcased exceptional talent in the Under-21 ranks. In the 2022/23 season, he made a significant impact, scoring 29 goals and providing 18 assists in Premier League 2. His performances drew the attention of scouts worldwide, leading to his transfer to Ajax. Ben Wilkinson, the Under-21s coach at City, emphasized the influence of Forbs’s success, stating, “Carlos had one year where he was electric in the Under-21s and at the end of the season there was a massive transfer fee to Ajax.”
Despite his promise, Forbs struggled to secure a place in Ajax’s starting lineup during the 2023/24 season, starting only eight of the club’s 34 Eredivisie matches. He managed three goals and five assists across 32 appearances, but a series of managerial shifts and tactical decisions limited his opportunities. Coach Vitor Pereira remarked on Forbs’s playing style, highlighting the challenges of fitting him into his system: “He’s a winger, one against one. To do what I want in this system is difficult for him when we are defending.”
In June 2024, Forbs received unexpected news via WhatsApp from Ajax’s technical director, Alex Kroes, informing him that he was no longer part of the club’s plans. This decision sparked controversy in the Netherlands, prompting criticism from the players’ union, the VVCS, which deemed it “improper employment.” Forbs, still just 21, faced yet another transition in his career.
He found a new home at Club Brugge, where he signed for €8.5 million. This move not only offered him a fresh start but also resulted in Manchester City receiving approximately €1.7 million due to a sell-on clause. Since joining Brugge, Forbs has begun to thrive once more, netting three goals and providing three assists in 14 matches. His performances have drawn praise, with Belgian publication Le Soir describing his start to the season as “explosive.”
Club Brugge captain Hans Vanaken expressed optimism about Forbs’s abilities, stating, “We all know his qualities. He’s incredibly fast and has great movement. He can play both on the left and right wings, which is practically impossible to defend.”
As Forbs continues to impress in Belgium, he remains hopeful for a potential reunion with Manchester City in the Champions League. His journey reflects the challenges and opportunities faced by young talents in today’s competitive football landscape, illustrating that even setbacks can lead to new beginnings and successes.
