Amsterdam Schiphol Runway Closed After Drone Sighting

Emergency measures were implemented at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport on March 30, 2024, when a runway was closed due to a reported drone sighting. The incident occurred around 12:10 PM local time, prompting authorities to shut down the Polderbaan runway for approximately 45 minutes.
According to a pilot of a Transavia flight, the drone was flying at an altitude of about 150 meters and was located approximately 50 meters from the aircraft. This prompted a swift police response, which included the deployment of a helicopter. Despite extensive search efforts, neither the drone nor its operator was located. A spokesperson for the military police, the Royal Marechaussee, characterized the situation as “quite unique,” suggesting that the operator was likely flying the drone as a hobby. Authorities assessed that the drone was relatively small and confirmed that air traffic was not endangered.
During the runway closure, air traffic was redirected from the Polderbaan to the Zwanenburgbaan, as a precautionary measure. A spokesperson for the Royal Marechaussee stated, “For safety reasons, air traffic was diverted from the Polderbaan to the Zwanenburgbaan at that time.”
While this incident appeared to be a harmless case of recreational drone use, there have been increasing concerns over drone activity in other European countries. The Danish Defence Ministry reported on March 30 that drones had been observed near several defence facilities in Denmark. These sightings follow a series of drone incidents that temporarily disrupted operations at Danish airports earlier in the week.
Reports indicate that drones were seen close to Karup Air Base, Denmark’s largest military installation. The Defence Ministry, however, declined to confirm specific sightings at Karup or other locations, citing “operational security” as a reason for withholding further details. The ministry did clarify that previous reports regarding drone activity at Skrydstrup Air Base and the Jutland Dragoon Regiment referred to earlier sightings that did not occur over the recent weekend.
Tensions surrounding drone activity have escalated in Denmark, with citizens reporting hundreds of potential sightings. Local media reported that drones were observed both within and outside the perimeter of the Karup Air Base on the evening of March 29, 2024. Simon Skelkjær, a duty manager with the Central and West Jutland Police, mentioned that the airspace was temporarily closed to civil air traffic, though this had minimal practical implications due to the lack of civilian flights at the base.
The repeated unexplained drone activity, which included incidents at four Danish airports, has raised significant security concerns in northern Europe, particularly in light of escalating tensions related to Russian military actions. Authorities have urged the public to report any suspicious aerial activity to law enforcement.
The incidents at Schiphol and across Denmark highlight the growing challenges posed by drone technology in aviation security and the need for effective regulatory measures to ensure safety in airspace.
