What’s Next for Knives Out? Plans for Future Films Unveiled
The Knives Out film series continues to captivate audiences since its debut in 2019. Following the success of the first movie, Netflix acquired the rights to produce two sequels: Glass Onion and the recently released Wake Up Dead Man. As the third installment garners praise from both critics and fans, attention turns to the future of this popular franchise.
Future Installments: What We Know
Following the success of the first film, Netflix secured the rights to produce two sequels. The agreement currently covers only these three films, and any potential future Knives Out movies would require a new deal, either with Netflix or a different distributor, such as Lionsgate, which released the original film. Director Rian Johnson has confirmed that he intends to continue the series, emphasizing that he would be the sole creator behind any future films, along with producer Ram Bergman.
In a recent interview, Johnson expressed his enthusiasm for the franchise. He stated, “As long as audiences want to keep seeing it… and we can come up with stuff that feels not just fresh, but a fresh challenge for us, I think that’ll translate to a new experience for the audience.” While he is keen to continue, Johnson also mentioned he may need to take a break before diving back into the series.
Daniel Craig’s Commitment and Casting Choices
Actor Daniel Craig, who portrays the eccentric detective Benoit Blanc, has also expressed interest in making another film. He remarked, “I don’t think I see it as a trilogy […] If we can wind each other up enough, then we’ll make another one.” This willingness suggests a promising future for the series, contingent on both Johnson and Craig’s schedules and interests.
Johnson has indicated a preference for new casts with each installment. He stated, “I love the fact that each one of these is entirely its own case, entirely its own mystery.” This means that audiences should not expect familiar faces from Wake Up Dead Man or Glass Onion to return. However, cameo appearances may still occur, as evidenced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who has contributed voice roles in all three films, and frequent collaborator Noah Segan, who has made cameo appearances.
The idea of a crossover with the Muppets has also sparked discussions among fans. While Johnson previously dismissed the notion, citing concerns about compromising the integrity of both franchises, Netflix took the opportunity to create a short parody featuring a Muppets version of Benoit Blanc, named Beignet Blanc. The parody received positive feedback, including approval from Craig, reigniting speculation about a potential collaboration.
All three Knives Out films are currently available for streaming on Netflix, keeping the momentum alive while audiences eagerly anticipate what lies ahead for this beloved series.
