ScotRail Faces Scrutiny After Four Staff Fail Drug Tests
Four train drivers and conductors employed by ScotRail have failed drug tests over the past three years, raising concerns about passenger safety on the network. The figures, released under freedom of information legislation, indicate that out of nearly 600 tests conducted since the 2022/23 period, one failure occurred in 2023-24 and three in 2024-25. ScotRail has not disclosed the specific substances involved in these failures or the locations where they occurred.
Scottish Conservative transport spokeswoman Sue Webber has criticized the situation, stating that it poses a significant risk to passenger safety. “This is utterly unacceptable because it potentially puts passengers’ lives at risk,” Webber said. She stressed the need for ScotRail to be transparent regarding the nature of the offences and whether any of the failed tests involved train drivers.
ScotRail, which is managed by the Scottish National Party (SNP), reports that it randomly tests at least five percent of its safety-critical staff, which includes drivers and conductors. In response to the scrutiny, Julie Dale from ScotRail emphasized that 99.4 percent of staff members tested since March 1, 2022, have passed their drug tests. She assured that appropriate action is always taken against individuals who fail these tests.
The issue has prompted a statement from Transport Scotland, affirming the importance of ensuring that all employees are fit for duty. “It is entirely appropriate that ScotRail, as employer, ensure staff are fit to work, which is why drug tests are undertaken by workers right across the transport sector as a condition of employment,” a spokesperson said.
The lack of detailed information about the drug failures has led to further criticism from various quarters. Webber has pointed out that the SNP ministers, who are in charge of ScotRail after nationalizing the service, bear ultimate responsibility for the safety of passengers.
The safety of the train network is not just a political issue; it directly affects the daily lives of commuters and travelers. With the recent incidents highlighting potential lapses in safety protocols, the focus is now on how ScotRail will address these challenges moving forward.
As the situation develops, the public and regulatory bodies will be watching closely to see how ScotRail implements measures to bolster safety and restore confidence in its operations.
