Mum-of-Five Set to Gain £900 Monthly After Benefit Cap Removal
A mother of five anticipates a substantial boost in her family’s financial support following the UK government’s decision to abolish the two-child benefit cap. Lisa White, a 31-year-old stay-at-home mother, estimates her monthly benefits will increase by approximately £900, bringing her total to around £2,770 starting in April 2024.
Lisa and her partner, David White, 35, currently rely on universal credit and child benefits to support their household, which includes children aged three to ten. David had to leave his job due to mental health challenges, leaving the family dependent on government assistance. Under the previous policy, which was introduced by the Conservative government in 2017, families were unable to claim universal credit or tax credits for any child beyond the second.
The removal of this cap, announced by Rachel Reeves in the latest budget, offers new opportunities for the White family. Lisa expressed her relief and excitement, noting that the additional funds will allow her children to participate in extracurricular activities they previously could not afford.
“The cap being removed will improve my kids’ lives and open so much up for them,” Lisa stated. “Money has been tight since Dave had to leave work, and now the food bill takes up most of our budget.” She highlighted that her nine-year-old son, Marley, has long wished to join a football club, and this financial uplift will finally make that possible. Additionally, her ten-year-old daughter, Layla, who has a passion for dance, can now attend classes.
The couple’s current monthly benefits stand at around £1,900, which has been stretched thin due to rising living costs. Lisa described their food expenses for the family of seven as “astronomical,” leading them to cut back on other essential areas, including after-school activities.
Lisa acknowledges that while the increase from the benefit cap removal may not significantly alter their financial situation, it will enhance their children’s access to enriching experiences. “It’s nice to know that we’ll get some extra money to put into our kids’ lives,” she remarked.
The change in policy not only impacts the White family but also represents a broader recognition of the financial challenges faced by larger families. Lisa emphasized the importance of supporting all children, stating that those who previously did not qualify for benefits are now being acknowledged as deserving of the same support as their older siblings.
As the new policy takes effect, families like Lisa’s will have a chance to thrive amidst the rising cost of living, allowing them to invest in their children’s development and happiness.
