Montenegro’s Women’s Volleyball Team Faces Tough Challenge at Euro 2024

The Montenegro women’s volleyball team will compete in a challenging group at the upcoming European Championship in Gothenburg, Sweden. The group includes formidable opponents: the host nation Sweden, the Olympic and world champion Italy, alongside France, Slovakia, and Croatia. Montenegro will make its debut at this prestigious tournament, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s sports history.
Head coach Jovo Caković acknowledged the difficulty of the group but emphasized the quality of all participating teams. “We found ourselves in a tough group, but the others are filled with strong national teams as well, and there are certainly no easy matches at the championship,” he stated. Caković highlighted the importance of the tournament as a platform for the players to showcase their talents on a grand stage.
He noted the team’s experience from the Golden League, which has provided them with insights into the strengths of some of their opponents. “We are familiar with Slovakia, and we had the opportunity to see Sweden in action during the Golden League final four in the spring. The most important thing is for the girls to arrive at the championship healthy and in good form, playing well for their clubs and coming together in the strongest possible lineup,” Caković added.
For the team captain, Nikoleta Perović, participating in the European Championship represents the pinnacle of her long international career. “The group is indeed demanding—Italy is the world champion, France is a very solid team, and Sweden boasts Isabella Haak, one of the best outside hitters in the world,” Perović remarked. Despite the challenges, she sees every match as an opportunity to demonstrate the team’s character and spirit.
“We are aware of the challenges but also of our strengths. We will give our best to represent Montenegro in the best possible way,” she affirmed.
The fourth edition of the European Championship featuring 24 teams will take place from August 21 to September 6, 2024. In addition to Gothenburg, the tournament will also be hosted in Istanbul, Brno, and Baku. Turkey will enter as the defending champion, having won the previous edition.
As Montenegro prepares for this historic debut, the nation’s volleyball community and fans eagerly anticipate how their team will perform against some of the best in Europe.
