Montenegro’s President Advocates EU Integration at Sciences Po
During a visit to France, Montenegro’s President Jakov Milatović delivered a lecture at the prestigious institution Sciences Po in Paris. This university has been a formative ground for numerous global leaders, including six former French presidents. Milatović addressed the topic “The European Integration Process: The Story of Montenegro,” presenting his vision for a modern, decisive Montenegro committed to becoming the 28th member of the European Union by 2028.
In his address, Milatović emphasized that Montenegro is currently the most advanced candidate for EU membership. He expressed confidence that the country can conclude negotiations by 2026 and earn its rightful place within the European family two years later. He described Montenegro’s path to Europe as not only a political objective but also a national project that unifies society around shared values, stability, knowledge, and progress.
Milatović pointed out Montenegro’s NATO membership, its use of the euro, and its full alignment with the EU’s common foreign and security policy. He asserted, “Our country demonstrates that it can have significant European influence when it possesses a clear vision and the courage to implement it.” He discussed four potential scenarios for future EU expansion, highlighting that the optimal outcome involves both the Union and its candidates delivering tangible results.
Recognizing the importance of education, Milatović placed special emphasis on the youth. He stated, “For young people, the European Union represents opportunities, knowledge, and standards.” To bridge the gap between young citizens and European institutions, Montenegro has initiated the EU Academy, designed to foster learning, creativity, and leadership among youth. He concluded his remarks by affirming that the vision of a European Montenegro is built daily at home, through the knowledge, work, and ideas of citizens who believe in the country’s future.
The lecture by President Milatović garnered significant interest from students and faculty, reinforcing Montenegro’s growing voice in European discussions about the continent’s future. This event highlighted the country’s commitment to EU integration and its proactive approach to engaging with European institutions.
