Montenegrin Duo Launches Captivating EP Inspired by Villanelle
A new musical project titled “5+1”, created by Montenegrin duo Nemanja Bečanović and Željko Milović, has emerged, drawing inspiration from the complex narrative of Idoja Lopez Rianjo, a figure linked to the infamous Basque separatist group ETA. This EP, which features five tracks and an additional piece, combines elements of electropop reminiscent of the early eighties, marking a significant contribution to the Montenegrin music scene.
The story of Idoja Lopez Rianjo begins in the Basque Country during the 1980s. Known as “La Tigresa,” she became notorious for her involvement in ETA, committing her first politically motivated murder at just 20 years old. Over the next two years, her actions led to the deaths of 23 individuals before she vanished from the public eye. After being apprehended in August 1994 with a partner in southern France, Lopez Rianjo served five years in prison there, followed by an additional 23 years in Spain. She was released in 2017, vowing to redirect her life away from her past.
Milović, a notable journalist and author, and Bečanović, a seasoned musician with a background in grunge music, have crafted their EP to echo the themes of obsession and duality present in Lopez Rianjo’s life. The release of “5+1” showcases a blend of modern influences while paying homage to the sounds of earlier decades.
Musical Elements and Themes
The EP opens with the track “Pogledaj,” which sets the tone for the project with its introspective lyrics and atmospheric soundscapes. Milović’s poetic approach shines through as he explores themes of longing and connection, stating, “Moj dan čuti i sjedi/ plaši se dodira/ istina usne nema/ ljubi ga riječima” (My day listens and sits/ afraid of touch/ the truth has no lips/ it kisses with words).
The standout pieces, “Umoran” and “Signali,” encapsulate the essence of the EP. In “Umoran,” Milović poignantly expresses a sailor’s yearning for home, while “Signali” evokes the imagery of three white flashes signaling safety and reassurance to sailors navigating the Adriatic Sea. This use of maritime symbolism serves as a metaphor for finding solace amidst chaos.
Musically, the EP channels the spirit of Joy Division and New Order, merging retro synth sounds with contemporary production techniques. The track “Villanelle” resonates with the haunting qualities of its namesake, exploring the complexities of human emotions and relationships.
A Tribute to Artistic Growth
The project serves as a tribute not only to Lopez Rianjo but also to the artistic evolution of both Milović and Bečanović. The pair’s collaboration reflects a deep understanding of their musical roots while embracing new directions. Milović’s homage to pioneering artists like Đorđe Balašević and Johnnie Štulić is evident in the stylistic shifts throughout the EP, showcasing a maturation in their craft.
The closing track, “Prozirna,” further solidifies the project’s thematic core—an exploration of transparency and vulnerability. The lyrics invite listeners to reflect on their own experiences, drawing parallels between personal journeys and the broader human experience.
With “5+1,” Milović and Bečanović not only honor the intricate narrative of Idoja Lopez Rianjo but also contribute a significant chapter to the Montenegrin music landscape. Their work is a celebration of resilience and creativity, resonating with audiences both locally and internationally. This EP is a reminder of the power of music to bridge past and present, inviting us to reflect on our own stories while navigating the complexities of life.
As the duo continues to explore new artistic horizons, “5+1” stands as a testament to their commitment to innovative sound and meaningful storytelling.
