On the occasion of the city’s Liberation Day, Jakov Milatović, the President of Montenegro, visited Bar to celebrate the significance of the day and to outline plans for the city’s future development. During his address, he expressed that Bar symbolizes freedom, anti-fascism, and multi-ethnic harmony, essential components in the fabric of contemporary Montenegro. Milatović underscored the importance of translating these values into tangible results, stating, “This day reminds us that freedom and anti-fascism are priceless and it is up to us to turn these values into work, results, and a fair state.”

Five Pillars of Development for Bar

Milatović presented a vision for Bar’s growth, structured around five key pillars. The first priority is transforming Bar into a modern European port and transport hub. He highlighted the significance of the reconstruction of the Bar–Golubovci railway, supported by the European Union, as a critical step in connecting the highway to the Port of Bar. He emphasized that “trains, trucks, and ships must operate in sync,” ensuring that when transportation is efficient, the port can function at full capacity, creating new job opportunities and establishing Bar as Montenegro’s gateway to the world.

The second pillar focuses on improving public services and safety for residents. Milatović called for the urgent establishment of an emergency unit in Bar’s hospital, while also celebrating the construction of a new kindergarten and plans for a high school, viewing these as vital investments in the future of the city’s youth.

Tourism represents the third pillar, with Milatović asserting that the unique combination of olive groves, gastronomic tourism, and the largest lake in the Balkans positions Bar for exceptional tourist potential. He compared the anticipated tourist experience from the Kotor-Lovćen cable car to a new jewel in Montenegro’s tourism crown, suggesting that “the views from the lake, across Rumija to Bar, would be a new tourist gem.”

Cultural Heritage and Community Connections

The fourth pillar addresses the preservation and appreciation of Bar’s rich cultural and historical heritage. Milatović pointed out that Bar connects diverse civilizations, cultures, and religions, which is a treasure that must be strategically safeguarded. He mentioned significant cultural sites, such as the Spič Church, the Ratac Monastery, and the Omerbašić Mosque, affirming that Bar is a place of unity rather than division.

Lastly, the fifth pillar emphasizes Bar’s role in building bridges between people, cities, and countries. Concluding his speech, Milatović reminded the citizens of Bar that the city’s history brings both pride and responsibility. He referenced the ancient olive tree, symbolizing resilience as it has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, stating, “We decide how we will be remembered. Do not settle for less. Let us ignite a wave of work, enthusiasm, and progress. I am ready to work alongside you.”

This call to action reflects Milatović’s commitment to not only honor Bar’s legacy but also to actively engage its citizens in shaping a prosperous future.
