Machete Incident Leads to Lockdown at Warwickshire College

A serious incident unfolded at Warwickshire College in Leamington on October 3, 2023, when armed police responded to reports of a teenager wielding a machete. Around 12:20 p.m., two boys entered the college’s games room, leading to a confrontation that escalated dramatically. Witnesses described a scene where one of the boys brandished a “two-foot machete,” swinging it before fleeing the premises.
The college was immediately placed on lockdown as authorities prioritized the safety of students and staff. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Witness accounts, including one from a 16-year-old student named Madison Brown, highlighted the shock of the situation, particularly the fact that the attackers managed to enter the college with such a large weapon.
Madison’s father, Adam Brown, expressed his disbelief to the Observer, stating, “This is not a penknife we’re talking about – it’s a two-foot machete.” He attempted to reach the college to inquire about the incident but was unable to get through.
Police Response and Arrests
Following the alarming incident, Chief Inspector Simon Ryan, the policing commander for south Warwickshire, assured the public of swift action. He confirmed that a 17-year-old boy was arrested shortly after the event at his home, facing charges of attempted wounding and possession of an offensive weapon. The police are conducting searches at the suspect’s residence as part of their ongoing investigation.
Ryan noted, “This was clearly a terrifying incident for everyone concerned, and I would like to reassure people that we have taken prompt action to detain a suspect.” He emphasized that preliminary findings suggest the altercation stemmed from a disagreement, with no further risk posed to the community.
In addition to the primary suspect, two other boys were taken into custody on suspicion of violent disorder during the police response. Authorities are reviewing social media footage of the incident, inviting anyone with video evidence to come forward.
Community Safety Measures
To bolster security, police will maintain a visible presence at the college in the coming days. Chief Inspector Ryan encouraged anyone with concerns to approach officers on site.
For those with further information regarding the incident, Warwickshire Police can be contacted via their website or by calling 101. Additionally, anonymous tips can be submitted to the charity Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety measures within educational environments, prompting discussions on how to prevent such occurrences in the future.
