The historic manuscript known as the Cetinje Psalter, a significant piece of Montenegrin heritage dating back to the 15th century, has been released in a digital format. This initiative, a collaboration between Matica crnogorska and the National Library of Montenegro “Đurđe Crnojević”, makes the treasured manuscript accessible to a broader audience.

The digital version of the Cetinje Psalter was made possible through the efforts of the University Library Zagreb, which holds the manuscript under the signature R–3349. The original manuscript is believed to have been created in the first quarter of the 15th century, during the reign of the Balsić dynasty, in one of the scriptoriums located around Skadar Lake, prior to 1421.

Historical Significance of the Manuscript

The Cetinje Psalter holds a vital place in the history of Montenegro. As noted in the introduction by Ivan Ivanović, General Secretary of Matica crnogorska, and Dragica Lompar, former director of the National Library, the manuscript was among the first books brought to the newly established library of the Cetinje Monastery in the late 15th century. This period marked the emergence of Cetinje as the capital of Montenegro under the Crnojević dynasty.

The establishment of the monastery library, filled with handwritten texts, was crucial for the development of a cultural and literary center in Cetinje. The Cetinje Psalter not only served as a religious text but also inspired further copies of this important biblical book.

Prominent medievalist Božidar Šekularac provided a codicological description of the manuscript and contributed significantly to the project’s execution. In his remarks, he highlighted the importance of the Psalter as a liturgical book, stating that its number of editions exceeds that of all other liturgical texts from the 15th and 16th centuries combined. He emphasized its religious and philosophical significance, noting its role in the regular liturgical life of the church.

Details of the Electronic Edition

The digital edition of the Cetinje Psalter has been printed in a limited run of 100 copies, showcasing its exclusive nature. This electronic format aims to preserve the manuscript’s legacy while allowing for easier access by scholars and the general public alike.

In addition to the Cetinje Psalter, Matica crnogorska plans to release other phototypical editions in electronic format. These include the “Praznični minej”, printed by Božidar Vuković from Podgorica, the “Psaltir s posljedovanjem” from the Crnojević printing house, and the “Praesbiteri Diocleatis Regnum Slavorum.”

This move towards digitization reflects a growing trend in preserving and promoting cultural heritage, making historical texts more accessible to future generations. The release of the Cetinje Psalter in electronic form is a significant step in ensuring that this vital piece of Montenegrin history remains part of the cultural discourse.
