The RAF College Cranwell held a significant graduation ceremony on March 15, 2024, attended by The Duke of Gloucester, who serves as the Royal Air Force’s Honorary Air Marshal. The event marked the culmination of rigorous training for new officers, signifying a pivotal moment as they embark on their commissioned careers. The Duke presided over the Sovereign’s Review alongside Air Commodore John Lyle, the college’s commandant.

The ceremony featured an impressive flypast by aircraft from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and a Typhoon jet from RAF Coningsby. The musical accompaniment was provided by the Band of the Royal Air Force College, enhancing the celebratory atmosphere of the occasion.

Honours and Awards for Top Cadets

During the annual parade, the Duke awarded prizes to the top-performing cadets from various training courses. This included graduates from the Number 36 Modular Initial Officer Training Course, Number 31 Commissioned Warrant Officer Course, and the Number 1 Commissioning Flight Sergeant Course. The recipients of notable awards included:

  • The Sword of Honour – Officer Cadet Tynan
  • The Overseas Students Prize – Officer Cadet Al-Shafi
  • The Kings Medal – Flying Officer Day
  • The Jackie Moggridge Spitfire Award – Air Recruit Turnbull
  • The MacRobert Sword of Honour Annual Award – Flying Officer Susca
  • The International Sword of Honour – Lieutenant Hamisch

Air Commodore Lyle expressed his pride in the graduates, stating, “It is a privilege to welcome His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester to review our graduating officers. I am incredibly proud of the young women and men that have been deemed to meet the high standards required to be an officer in the Royal Air Force.” He has held command since succeeding Air Commodore Andrew Dickens OBE in July 2024.

A Day of Celebration and Community Engagement

After the awards, the Duke took time to meet with the graduating officers and their guests. He also participated in a community engagement initiative by planting a lime tree alongside children from Cranwell Primary School and the RAFAKidz nursery. This act symbolized a commitment to nurturing future generations.

The day’s festivities concluded with a graduation ball and a fireworks display, creating an enjoyable atmosphere for all participants. The event not only celebrated the achievements of the new officers but also emphasized the importance of community and tradition within the Royal Air Force.
