Vlatko Gilić Discusses Art, Humanity, and the Struggle Against Evil
Renowned filmmaker Vlatko Gilić recently shared his insights on the role of art in addressing human struggles during an interview held in Belgrade. Gilić, who has made a significant impact in the realm of documentary filmmaking, discussed how his work aims to explore the essence of humanity and its relationship with the concept of evil.
Gilić, who has received numerous accolades, including a Gold Medal at the Belgrade Festival in 1970 for his film “Zategni dele,” a Grand Prix in 1971 for “In continuo,” and another Gold Medal in 1972 for “Dan više,” is recognized for his artistic exploration of complex themes. His films have also garnered international recognition, including a Silver Bear at the Berlin Festival and a special award at the Oberhausen Festival for his trilogy consisting of “In continuo,” “Juda,” and “Dan više.”
In his recent conversation, Gilić emphasized the importance of humanity in his work. “Without humanity, there would be no films. My entire creation is directed towards man,” he stated. He described his creative process as a continuous journey to uncover deeper truths about human existence.
Exploring Metaphysical Themes
Gilić’s films often feature multiple layers of thought, with many elements bordering on the metaphysical. He explained that during the creative process, he encounters ideas that strive to unify into a significant artistic statement, which he believes is essential for the nature of art. “Without this element of mystery, there would be no art,” Gilić asserted, noting that it is this very mystery that renders art timeless and relevant across different eras.
His film “Juda,” often mischaracterized solely as a documentary about snakes, serves as a profound exploration of the human condition. He sees the narrative as a confrontation with evil, depicting a struggle both external and internal. The film’s metaphorical implications highlight the duality of man’s existence, as he battles the embodiment of evil represented by the snakes.
The Essence of Human Struggle
In discussing the struggle against evil, Gilić insisted that the human spirit is far from helpless. “The conflict with evil is, in fact, a path out of it,” he explained. He illustrated this through the protagonist’s journey in “Juda,” where the battle against external forces symbolizes a deeper internal struggle. Gilić emphasized that the essence of human existence is to persist, even in seemingly futile circumstances.
His documentary “Dan više” continues this exploration, presenting the idea that moments of despair should not equate to surrender. “The essence of human existence is to endure,” he stated. The title itself reflects this notion, suggesting a desire for more time and life, encompassing all aspects of human experiences from love to mortality.
As audiences engaged with his films, Gilić observed a profound connection between viewers and the themes presented. The emotional responses he received, including a long applause at a recent screening, confirmed his belief that he successfully communicated the essence of his message.
Gilić concluded the discussion with a reminder of the artist’s responsibility to challenge the evils that plague society. “An artist must strive to break the ceiling of evil that hangs above us,” he asserted, encapsulating his dedication to exploring the depths of human experience through his art.
Through his films and insights, Vlatko Gilić not only contributes to the world of cinema but also challenges audiences to reflect on their own lives and the inherent struggles they face. His commitment to capturing the human spirit continues to resonate, ensuring that his work remains relevant and impactful.
