Sarajevo’s Divanhana Launches European Tour with New Album
The Sarajevo-based band Divanhana has embarked on a major European tour, starting with concerts in Montenegro on October 22, 2023, at the Cultural Centre in Pljevlja, followed by a performance on October 23 at the KIC Budo Tomovic in Podgorica. The tour is aimed at promoting their sixth studio album, titled “Radio Sevdah”, which presents a musical journey blending traditional Balkan sounds with modern influences.
Following a captivating performance, Selma Droce, the lead vocalist of Divanhana, shared insights about the album’s themes and the delicate balance between preserving tradition and introducing innovative elements. The band aims to evoke nostalgia while also embracing contemporary genres, a blend that resonates with audiences.
The initial reactions from the Montenegrin audience have been overwhelmingly positive. Droce expressed her delight, stating, “The audience in Montenegro truly appreciates and loves sevdalinka. There is a rich tradition here, from gusle music to klapa singing along the coast. People reacted wonderfully to our repertoire, and we continue with great energy.”
Exploring the Essence of “Radio Sevdah”
The title “Radio Sevdah” serves as a tribute to the once-popular Radio Sarajevo, which played a significant role in recording numerous traditional sevdah songs throughout the 20th century. Droce emphasized that the album aims to continue the preservation of these cultural values while embarking on a creative adventure. “We wanted to evoke the spirit of sevdah,” she said, “to tell stories and create our own music reminiscent of what was done at Radio Sarajevo.”
The album features a diverse collection of songs, with nine original tracks and five interpretations of classic sevdalinka pieces. Droce articulated the band’s vision, stating that the primary aim of the album is to showcase the emotional depth and variety of life in the Balkans. “We want to portray all aspects of life in Bosnia and Herzegovina, reflecting both tradition and contemporary influences,” she added.
One of the distinguishing features of Divanhana’s music is its incorporation of modern genres, including hip-hop, jazz, and electronic rhythms. This fusion has allowed them to maintain the authenticity of sevdalinka while presenting it in a fresh light. Droce believes this approach is key to engaging younger audiences, asserting, “Tradition does not belong to anyone, yet it belongs to everyone.”
The Journey of Musical Exploration
Creating an album like “Radio Sevdah” represents a significant musical and spiritual journey for the band. Droce acknowledged the challenges of interpreting traditional music in a contemporary context, stating that it requires an understanding of the historical conditions under which these songs were created. “To find the sound and bring it to life, we must explore the past,” she explained.
She highlighted the importance of research and education in their creative process, drawing from recordings from Radio Sarajevo that are decades old. “This exploration allows us to connect with the original sound while integrating our own experiences and influences,” Droce remarked.
Despite their commitment to preserving traditional music, Droce noted that sevdah is not mainstream today. Reflecting on a past conversation in Montenegro, she recalled how a young man described their music as “alternative.” “Sevdah is not the most popular genre right now, and we are aware of that,” she said. “But it’s essential to keep it alive. There is an element of elitism to sevdah, something that resonates with those who truly feel it.”
The album is a reflection of the band’s journey over the past four years, encapsulating their shared experiences and artistic evolution. Droce expressed pride in the collaborative nature of the project, emphasizing that the album is a cohesive expression of their collective vision.
As Divanhana continues its European tour, the band remains dedicated to sharing the beauty and richness of sevdah with audiences, revitalizing this cherished music genre for both longtime fans and new listeners alike.
