Pauling Unveils Ambitious Plans for The Jukebox Man’s Return

Ben Pauling has confirmed that the primary objective for his horse, The Jukebox Man, is a return to competitive racing at the prestigious King George VI Chase this season. The seven-year-old has not competed since his impressive victory at Kempton on Boxing Day last year. With this notable race at the forefront of Pauling’s plans, anticipation is building for his return.

The Jukebox Man is currently recuperating from an injury that limited his participation in spring festivals. Pauling is considering a comeback in handicap races at Cheltenham next month or Ascot the following week to prepare for the King George. “It will be either the Paddy Power Gold Cup on November 15 or the Ladbrokes 1965 Chase on November 22 for The Jukebox Man,” Pauling stated.

The trainer emphasized the horse’s potential, noting, “He’s still unexposed and he did win a Grade One, but he didn’t actually get the opportunity to run at either of the spring festivals.” Pauling believes there is still room for improvement in The Jukebox Man’s performance, which could be beneficial in a handicap setting. He remarked, “He looks amazing and is moving well,” while acknowledging the importance of a careful approach following last year’s injury.

As an owner, Harry Redknapp will be eager to see The Jukebox Man maintain his unbeaten record over larger obstacles. Pauling is cautious in his training regimen, stating, “We’re upping his work all the time but of course we are cautious not to do too much too soon.” Ensuring the horse is race-ready remains a priority, with plans to take a measured approach.

The upcoming races are viewed as crucial stepping stones, with Pauling suggesting they will likely be The Jukebox Man’s only outing before the King George. “He’s got a lot of pace for a winner over three miles, hence I wouldn’t mind bringing him back to two and a half,” he explained. Joining The Jukebox Man in Pauling’s stable is Handstands, another promising horse. Handstands is expected to begin his season at the Colin Parker Memorial Intermediate Chase at Carlisle on November 2, and is being considered for a potential run in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Pauling highlighted the differences in their racing styles, stating, “He’s a different horse to The Jukebox Man,” and expressed confidence in Handstands’ abilities.

Pauling is optimistic about the upcoming season, stating, “It’s an exciting season ahead with the likes of The Jukebox Man and Handstands going to war in open company.” He believes both horses can rise to the next level, with Handstands showing potential as a Gold Cup contender. While Handstands has proven capable over two and a half miles, Pauling anticipates that The Jukebox Man may be better suited for a different race, possibly the Ryanair Chase, rather than the Gold Cup this year.
