New Via Ferrata Trail Opens in Lovćen National Park

A new attraction has been unveiled at **Lovćen National Park** in Montenegro, thanks to the efforts of **Rajko Popović** and his sons, **Dejan** and **Vuk**, members of the **Alpinistic Club “Slobodni penjači – Cetinje.”** The newly installed **Via Ferrata Štirovnik** offers adventure enthusiasts a secure way to experience climbing, making it accessible even for those without prior mountaineering skills.
The term “via ferrata,” derived from Italian, translates to “iron path.” This climbing route is equipped with steel cables, iron pegs, and footholds, allowing climbers to safely navigate vertical obstacles. Popović, club president and founder, emphasizes that users of the via ferrata can enjoy the thrill of climbing with a guarantee of safety throughout their ascent.
Details of the Via Ferrata Štirovnik
The route is named after **Štirovnik Peak**, where it is located. According to Popović, the peak has been a significant training ground for local climbers. He stated, “From our first climbing adventures, Štirovnik was our main training ground in the world of mountaineering.” The via ferrata was developed as an extreme attraction for the Lovćen area, aiming to enhance the region’s reputation among adventure seekers.
The route is situated on the eastern cliffs of Štirovnik, known for being the only vertical rock of substantial height in the entire Lovćen region. While the local rock formations are often crumbly and less steep, the via ferrata utilizes the most solid sections of the cliffs, incorporating elements from existing climbing routes such as “Kamikaza,” “Lovćen’s Beauty,” and “Cave Before the Peak.”
The installation of the via ferrata involved using battery-powered drills to minimize environmental impact. Popović reassured that no flora or fauna was harmed during the construction, stating, “The appearance of the rock remains unchanged, and the equipment blends in with the surroundings from a distance.”
Safety and Accessibility for Climbers
The **Via Ferrata Štirovnik** spans **145 meters** with an elevation gain of **105 meters**. It is classified as a category **C** climb, which is considered a moderate difficulty level. The route features **110 iron footholds**, **45 intermediate iron pegs**, **17 anchor points**, and **210 meters** of cable. A 14-meter ladder with a 75-degree incline has also been installed to aid climbers in navigating steep sections.
Accessing the via ferrata begins at **Međuvršje**, located at an altitude of **1,340 meters above sea level**. Climbers follow a hiking trail to reach the eastern col, leading to the vertical cliffs where the route starts at **1,540 meters** and culminates at **1,645 meters**. After completing the climb, hikers can either proceed to the summit of Štirovnik at **1,749 meters** or return via the designated trail.
The via ferrata is expected to attract both local and international visitors, contributing to the active tourism landscape of Montenegro. Popović noted that via ferratas are increasingly popular worldwide, and the Štirovnik route adds to the appeal of the region.
The project was completed in just **24 days**, from planning to execution, thanks to the teamwork of the Popović family. They received support from **Milan Vlahović** of the **Environmental Protection Agency**, as well as assistance from **Nikola Đurašković**, the mayor, and the local government of **Cetinje**. The **Cetinje Tourist Organization**, particularly **Nikola Jablan**, provided sponsorship for materials and equipment, recognizing the potential of the project for adventure tourism.
With the opening of the **Via Ferrata Štirovnik**, Lovćen National Park has enhanced its offerings for adventurers and climbers, providing a new way to experience Montenegro’s natural beauty.
