Montenegro to Host EU-Western Balkans Summit in 2026
Montenegro will host the historic summit of the European Union and Western Balkans on June 1, 2026. This significant event, led by the President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović, will gather leaders from EU member states, marking it as one of the largest diplomatic occasions in Europe next year. The decision by the European Council to hold the summit in Montenegro underscores a strong political message and acknowledges the progress made by Montenegrin citizens on their path to European integration.
According to a statement from President Milatović’s office, the summit not only affirms the Western Balkans’ place in Europe’s future but also recognizes Montenegro as a credible partner committed to regional stability and development. The most recent report from the European Commission confirms that Montenegro could achieve EU membership by 2028, reinforcing the country’s strategic goals.
Milatović emphasized the importance of building a modern and strong state that serves the interests of all its citizens. He stated, “The goals currently facing our institutions must be achieved, with a complete focus on implementing reforms and working towards a modern society with a robust economy.” He highlighted that reaching these objectives will pave the way for Montenegro to secure a membership agreement by the time of the EU-Western Balkans summit.
Symbolic Significance of the Summit
The organization of the summit in Montenegro carries symbolic weight. It coincides with the 20th anniversary of the country’s independence, providing a platform to discuss the future of EU enlargement, a new investment plan for the EU, and the integration of the region into a unified European market. Milatović expressed that this is a pivotal moment for Montenegro to receive confirmation of its potential EU membership by 2028, aiming to strengthen political, economic, and security ties with EU member states.
The upcoming summit will serve as a message of confidence in Montenegro’s state stability, its institutions, and the outcomes of daily efforts to build a modern society. Milatović reiterated that the government’s commitment is to “complete the job” by working diligently to construct a modern society and a strong economy for all citizens.
As preparations for this significant event continue, it is clear that Montenegro is poised to play a crucial role in the dialogue surrounding EU integration and regional cooperation in the coming years.
