A unique concert took place in Podgorica, Montenegro, on July 29, 2023, featuring the celebrated Macedonian darkwave band, Mizar. Part of the annual Podgoričko kulturno ljeto festival, organized by the Secretariat for Culture of the Capital City, the event drew a vibrant crowd eager to experience the band’s distinct musical expression.

Mizar opened the concert with their adaptation of the 135th Psalm, setting a profound tone for the evening. The setlist included beloved tracks such as “Devojka od bronza,” “Magla,” “Gradot e nem,” and their latest release, “Grozomora.” The band’s performance was marked not only by their unique sound, which blends darkwave, Orthodox chants, and traditional Macedonian folklore but also by the powerful voice of frontman Niko Đorgievski. His operatic tenor resonated throughout the venue, captivating the audience with an energy reminiscent of both opera and heavy metal.

Reflecting on the concert, Đorgievski expressed to the local media outlet Pobjeda that this performance was his favorite with Mizar to date. “I am very grateful to the audience. I never expected such warm reactions and compliments. Everyone was with us; there was no wall between us,” he shared, emphasizing the deep connection felt during the show.

This concert marked Đorgievski’s debut performance in Montenegro. He recounted an interesting encounter with an audience member from Scandinavia who, despite being unfamiliar with Mizar’s music, remained for the entire performance captivated by the energy projected on stage. “I can say, and we all know, that we are very similar here in the Balkans. We recognize each other,” he noted, highlighting the cultural ties within the region.

Having been with Mizar for just a year and a half, Đorgievski’s journey into the band began when he offered his studio for rehearsals. Initially, he collaborated with the band’s former vocalist, Zoran Tortevski, before being invited to join as a backing vocalist. “It all happened spontaneously and simply,” he explained. His passion for music evolved over the years, beginning as a rock and metal enthusiast before discovering Mizar’s unique sound, which resonates deeply with him now.

While Mizar’s music often incorporates clear religious themes and symbolism, Đorgievski describes himself as not being religious but possessing a profound respect for spirituality. “Our task is to connect people with ideas and make life a little more bearable,” he stated, reflecting on the band’s mission to create emotional connections through music.

The concert attracted several hundred attendees, primarily from younger and middle-aged generations. Đorgievski observed that older generations are more familiar with Mizar’s work, while younger audiences are beginning to discover and appreciate the band’s artistry. “This is not a genre for the masses. People listen to us more today, of course, than before because information spreads faster,” he remarked.

As Mizar continues to embrace its cultural roots, Đorgievski expressed optimism about upcoming projects. The band is actively working on new material, with “Grozomora” being just the beginning. “I would sincerely love to see everyone again soon,” he concluded, leaving the audience eager for future performances from this dynamic band.
