Eva Green Joins Netflix’s Wednesday as New Character Ophelia
The popular series Wednesday on Netflix has welcomed Eva Green to its cast for the upcoming third season. Green, known for her roles in films such as Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and Casino Royale, will portray Ophelia, the sister of Morticia Adams. This announcement follows the character’s introduction in the second season finale, which aired in summer 2023.
Green’s casting marks the first confirmed addition to the series’ third season, which received the green light earlier this year. Speculation surrounding the character of Ophelia had been rife, with many fans believing that Lady Gaga would take on the role, especially after her cameo appearance in the second season as Professor Rosalyn Thornhill.
Character Background and Plot Intrigue
Ophelia Framp, much like her niece Wednesday, possesses psychic abilities that have led her mother, Hester Framp (played by Joanna Lamli), to have her committed to the mental institution known as Nevermore Academy. After escaping, she disappeared, leaving her fate uncertain. The second season finale provided a chilling glimpse of Ophelia, with Wednesday (played by Jenna Ortega) having a vision of a woman with long blue hair. The episode concluded with a dramatic reveal: Hester is shown locking Ophelia in a cell in her mansion’s basement, where she ominously writes “Wednesday must die” in her own blood.
Ophelia’s long blue hair serves as a stark contrast to her gothic sister Morticia, enhancing the tension within the Adams family dynamic. Notably, in the original Addams Family series from the 1960s, the same actress, Carolyn Jones, portrayed both sisters, wearing a blue wig for the role of Ophelia.
About the Series and Its Success
“Wednesday” is a supernatural detective mystery series created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, following Wednesday Adams during her high school years at Nevermore Academy.
The show features a talented ensemble cast, including Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair, Hunter Doohan as Tyler Galpin, Joy Sunday as Bianca Barclay, and Musa Mostafa as Eugene Otinger. Renowned figures such as Luis Guzmán and Catherine Zeta-Jones reprise their roles as Gomez and Morticia Adams, respectively, while Fred Armisen plays Uncle Fester.
Since its debut, the second season of Wednesday has quickly climbed the ranks to become the fourth most-watched English-language series on Netflix, following the first season, which remains at the top. The show’s visual style and engaging storytelling have attracted a large audience, while Tim Burton serves both as director and executive producer.
As anticipation builds for the third season, the introduction of Ophelia promises to add further complexity to the already dynamic Addams family narrative. Fans are eager to see how Green’s portrayal will unfold in the darkly whimsical world of Wednesday.
