Arbroath Defeats Ross County 2-0, Raising Questions on Team’s Future
In a critical Championship match on March 30, 2024, Ross County suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat against Arbroath, deepening their struggles at the bottom of the league. Interim manager John Robertson expressed serious concerns about the team’s ability to compete, particularly after their fourth consecutive league loss, which leaves them five points adrift of both Queen’s Park and Airdrieonians.
The match, held at County’s home ground in Dingwall, started with promising moments for the hosts. Despite some early pressure, Ross County showed signs of resilience, with on-loan midfielder Ryan Duncan and winger Jay Henderson making notable contributions. However, it was Arbroath that struck first, with Jacob MacIntyre scoring in the 34th minute. The visitors capitalized on a well-placed cross from Victor Enem, leaving County’s goalkeeper, Trevor Carson, unable to respond.
Robertson, who took over after the departure of Tony Docherty, lamented the lack of clinical finishing from his side. “It’s not a lack of work rate; it’s just that football is a very simple game—you have to be clinical in both boxes,” he stated. He noted that the team had opportunities but failed to convert them, highlighting a recurring theme of the season.
As the match progressed, Arbroath doubled their lead with a stunning shot from Taylor Steven in the final ten minutes. His curling effort sealed the victory and sparked celebrations among the visiting fans, while many County supporters began leaving the stadium early in disappointment.
Robertson did not shy away from questioning whether some players are suited to Championship football. He suggested that a few individuals might believe they are too good for this level, despite a season that has not lived up to expectations. “We’ve played okay, but at this level, some players maybe think they’re too good for it,” he remarked.
The manager emphasized that improvement must come from within the squad. “The only people who can solve it are the players in the dressing room,” he said. Without substantial changes, he warned that the club could face the prospect of back-to-back relegations.
The defeat came as Ross County adjusted their tactical approach. Robertson made two changes to the lineup that suffered a heavy defeat against Raith Rovers, opting for a 4-4-3 formation instead of the three-man defense previously employed. Despite these adjustments, the team struggled to find their rhythm.
Looking ahead, Robertson acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead, particularly with league leaders set to visit next. “Our home form has been very poor, and we haven’t reacted,” he said. The urgency for results is paramount, as County’s next fixture against St Johnstone becomes vital in their battle to escape relegation threats.
The match was attended by 2,653 fans, with many leaving the stadium disheartened by the continuing decline of their team. In stark contrast, Arbroath’s victory puts them within four points of second-placed Partick Thistle, showcasing a significant turnaround in their season.
As Ross County reflects on another disappointing outing, the focus will undoubtedly shift to how they can reclaim their competitive edge and avoid the looming specter of relegation.
