Moon’s Waxing Crescent Phase Begins as New Cycle Unfolds

As of December 21, 2023, observers in the U.S. will see a Waxing Crescent Moon, with only 2% of its surface illuminated. This gradual increase in brightness will continue each night until the next Full Moon on January 3, 2024.

According to NASA’s Daily Moon Observation, the current phase signifies an early stage in the lunar cycle, where the Moon appears as a thin crescent. With minimal light reflecting off its surface, details on the Moon remain largely invisible to the naked eye.

Understanding the Lunar Cycle

The Moon’s cycle spans approximately 29.5 days, during which it transitions through eight distinct phases. This cycle begins with the New Moon, when the Moon is positioned between the Earth and the Sun, making it invisible to observers on Earth.

As it moves away from the New Moon, the Waxing Crescent phase emerges, followed by the First Quarter, where half of the Moon is illuminated. The subsequent phases include Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Third Quarter, and finally the Waning Crescent, before returning to the New Moon.

NASA explains that despite the same side of the Moon always facing Earth, the amount of sunlight it reflects varies, creating these observable phases.
