Devon Dentist Launches Groundbreaking Airway Protocol for Patients

A dentist in Totnes, UK, has developed a pioneering protocol aimed at transforming the treatment of various health issues associated with airway function. Dr. Kalina Borska, the owner of Venus Dental, created the Borska Airway Protocol to address conditions such as Sleep Apnoea, teeth grinding, and temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD). Her approach not only targets dental health but also connects to broader medical concerns, offering potential relief for issues like back pain and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Dr. Borska, originally from Poland, was drawn to Totnes, a town rich in scientific history, including its connection to the Victorian computer pioneer Charles Babbage. She believes the town’s innovative spirit has influenced her work. “I wouldn’t have come up with this idea anywhere else,” she remarked, emphasizing the unique environment that fostered her creativity.
Innovative Treatment Protocol
The protocol, which Dr. Borska has refined over several years, offers a systematic approach for dental and medical professionals to treat patients with airway-related conditions. “I’ve developed a clear protocol, a how-to guide, to give my fellow dental and medical professionals a safe and effective way to help these patients,” Dr. Borska stated. Her ambition is for this protocol to become a standard part of both dental and medical education.
Her interest in airway dentistry was ignited while working under the previous owner of the practice. Here, she met Dr. Steven Olmos, a pioneer in dental sleep medicine, who introduced her to the complexities of treating sleep-related disorders. “I was fascinated to hear there were answers to questions that had been unanswered for so long,” Dr. Borska explained. This early exposure motivated her to explore the link between dental care and overall health.
Dr. Borska’s commitment to holistic treatment became evident after she began seeing improvements in her patients. “It wasn’t only the relief from dental issues but the whole body benefited in a way I never anticipated,” she noted. Her patients have shared their journeys, which she hopes will inspire others facing similar challenges.
Creating a Welcoming Environment
In addition to her clinical innovations, Dr. Borska has transformed the atmosphere at Venus Dental. The practice now features local artwork in the waiting area, reflecting Totnes’s vibrant artistic community. “There are a lot of artists, very talented and creative people who live here,” she said. This initiative aims to create a comforting environment for patients, emphasizing the importance of mental well-being in health care.
Dr. Borska’s journey to dentistry was unconventional. Initially pursuing a career in architecture, her fascination with human anatomy led her to dentistry. “I got fascinated by it, but I knew, at the same time, that I don’t read very fast as I’m dyslexic,” she shared. Dentistry allowed her to merge her interests in anatomy and hands-on work, ultimately leading to her current success.
Today, Dr. Borska has gained international recognition for her work, presenting her findings to medical professionals worldwide. Her newly published textbook, The Borska Airway Protocol, serves as a comprehensive guide for those looking to implement her methods in their practices.
Dr. Borska’s achievements highlight the potential for innovative approaches in health care to bridge gaps between disciplines. As she continues to advocate for her protocol’s inclusion in academic curricula, her passion for improving patient outcomes remains at the forefront of her mission. “I’m dedicating my life to trying to make this happen,” she affirmed, demonstrating her commitment to reshaping the future of dentistry and medicine.
