Soludo Declares No Challengers Ahead of Anambra Election

Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, asserted that he has no serious challengers in the upcoming governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025. Speaking at an endorsement rally in Awka, attended by stakeholders from the Anambra Central Senatorial Zone, Soludo claimed that most of his competitors are merely seeking funds rather than genuinely contesting for the governorship position.
This rally marks the second time Soludo has received formal endorsement, following a previous event in Otuocha, where leaders from the Anambra North Senatorial Zone also backed his candidacy. During his address, Soludo emphasized the importance of the state’s zoning formula, stating that he intends to hand over the governorship to a candidate from the Central Zone after his term.
Soludo reinforced his position on zoning, explaining its historical context in Anambra politics. “It started with Central Zone with Peter Obi. When he finished, everyone agreed that for there to be order, fairness, and equity, zoning be institutionalized,” he said. He outlined the progression of leadership through the zones, highlighting how the governorship moved from Central to North and then to South, where he currently serves.
As he addressed supporters, Soludo expressed confidence in his campaign, stating, “I don’t know who else is contesting in this election, but we heard that some people are contesting but we don’t know who they are.” He reiterated that any candidate from the South challenging him would hinder the Central Zone’s rightful turn at leadership.
In his remarks, Soludo criticized some opponents for what he described as opportunism: “They are not contesting; they are doing fund raisings. I hear they have been going around begging top politicians, ministers that ‘you know I’m contesting for governor, please support me.’” He conveyed that his campaign has not yet formally launched, as he has not established a campaign council.
Soludo emphasized his commitment to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), stating, “Anambra is APGA and APGA is Anambra.” He projected a strong electoral performance, aiming to secure at least 90 percent of the votes in the Central Senatorial Zone.
The governor also shared his recent move to the Anambra Lighthouse City, the new government house, stating that he officially moved in the previous day. “You have not seen anything yet; we have more in line for Anambra people,” he added, hinting at forthcoming initiatives.
The rally featured endorsements from various stakeholders, including speeches from notable figures such as Osita Chidoka and Okey Muo-Aroh, representing student leaders, market leaders, and community leaders. The Deputy Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon Chukwuma Okoye, presented a communique from the entire zone, pledging their support for Soludo’s re-election campaign.
As the election date approaches, the political landscape in Anambra State continues to evolve, with Soludo positioning himself as a strong candidate backed by significant local support.
