Portsmouth Police Prepare to Deploy Live Facial Recognition Vans
High-risk criminals in Portsmouth have been put on notice as the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary prepares to deploy live facial recognition vans. This initiative is part of a national rollout intended to enhance police efforts in identifying and apprehending outstanding suspects.
The deployment follows a successful pilot conducted in September 2024, where the technology was tested in Portsmouth and other regions of Hampshire. This pilot demonstrated the potential of live facial recognition in targeting high-risk offenders and has paved the way for wider implementation.
The new technology will not only assist in identifying suspects but also aid in searches for high-risk missing individuals. The police force aims to initiate its first deployments later this year, providing officers with an innovative tool to combat crime.
Detective Chief Superintendent Tim Rowlandson, the lead for this project at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, expressed enthusiasm about the deployment. “We are really excited to have this technology here in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to help us target outstanding suspects and reduce crime,” he stated. The Chief Superintendent highlighted that the initial pilot resulted in seven arrests over three days and noted that other forces utilizing live facial recognition have reported significant reductions in crime in areas where the technology is deployed.
Rowlandson emphasized the benefits of this technology for police operations, stating, “This additional tactic not only helps to quickly identify suspects but also frees up officers’ time to focus on responding to emergencies, patrolling communities, and investigating crimes.”
As part of their commitment to modern policing, the force aims to equip officers with the latest technological advances. The aim is to enhance public safety, protect vulnerable individuals, and ensure that offenders are brought to justice. The police force will announce further details regarding the deployment plans in the coming months, keeping the community informed about this significant development in crime prevention efforts.
The introduction of live facial recognition vans marks a notable step in the evolution of policing techniques in the UK. By adopting such technology, authorities demonstrate a proactive approach to tackling crime and ensuring the safety of residents in Portsmouth and beyond.
