Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, has responded to allegations of racist behaviour during his time at Dulwich College, a prestigious private school in London. The remarks stem from a report by The Guardian, which includes testimonies from over a dozen former classmates who claim to have witnessed incidents of offensive conduct attributed to Farage during his teenage years.

In an interview on Monday, Farage addressed the claims made against him, stating, “This is 49 years ago, by the way. Forty-nine years ago.” He emphasized that he has never sought to harm anyone based on their background. When pressed to categorically deny any involvement in racial abuse, he clarified, “I would never, ever do it in a hurtful or insulting way.”

As inquiries about his past behaviour continued, Farage noted the difficulty of recalling events from his teenage years. “Can I remember everything that happened at school? No, I can’t,” he stated. He firmly rejected the notion that he participated in extremist organisations or engaged in personal abuse based on race, asserting, “No.”

Responding specifically to whether he engaged in racial abuse while at school, Farage stated, “Not with intent.” He acknowledged that comments made decades ago might be viewed differently in today’s context, admitting, “Have I said things 50 years ago that you could interpret as being banter in a playground? Yes.”

Despite the serious nature of the allegations, Farage maintained his stance, insisting, “I’ve never directly racially abused anybody. No.” His comments come at a time when public figures are increasingly scrutinised for their past statements and actions, particularly regarding issues of race and discrimination.

The allegations against Farage have sparked widespread debate, reflecting broader societal conversations about accountability and the legacy of past behaviours. As the leader of Reform UK, a party seeking to position itself as an alternative to the traditional political landscape, how these allegations will impact Farage’s political career remains to be seen.

This situation serves as a reminder of the complexities surrounding historical accountability and the shifting perceptions of language and behaviour over time.
