Early Life and Military Service

Wendy Fay moved to Berkshire County in 2002, but her roots trace back to Milford, Connecticut. After relocating to Cheshire at the age of 11, she attended Cheshire High School, graduating in 1978. Fay initially pursued a college education at Albright College, studying forestry, but her path shifted when she decided to join the Navy at the age of 24.

Fay chose the Navy for its diverse opportunities. “There were a lot more opportunities in the Navy than in the Air Force or the Army,” she explained. Stationed first in Hawaii at Ford Island, she later trained as a Seabee, specializing in construction. This role offered her a unique perspective, as she was one of only three women in a crew of 40 during her service.

Her military experience provided invaluable lessons in teamwork and adaptability. “You meet different people from all over,” she said, reflecting on her time in Hawaii, a multicultural environment that expanded her horizons.

Transitioning to Civilian Life

After completing her service, Fay returned to Connecticut, where she and her husband, Brian Wegner, purchased their first home in 1989 for $132,000. The couple bought a fixer-upper and gradually made it their own through hard work and determination.

In the years following her military tenure, Fay started a cleaning service before ultimately finding her way to the retail sector. Her transition to a customer service role at Price Chopper has allowed her to continue interacting with people, a passion she has retained from her military days.

Fay’s experience in the Navy has shaped her approach to her current job. “Sometimes you have to step back,” she noted, referring to how she manages customer interactions, especially when faced with dissatisfied shoppers. For her, maintaining a positive atmosphere is essential, and she takes pride in being able to defuse tense situations.

Community Connections and Personal Life

Wendy Fay’s connection to the community runs deep. Having moved to Otis to be closer to her family, her role as a caregiver became especially meaningful after the loss of her brother in 2001. Her commitment to her family is evident, as she has taken on the responsibility of caring for her aging parents.

Though she and her husband do not have children of their own, they have nurtured strong relationships with their nieces, nephews, and grandchildren, which she describes as a source of joy in her life.
