Celtic Imposes Three-Game Ban on Green Brigade Following Assault Incident
Celtic Football Club has announced a three-game ban on the Green Brigade following an incident during a match against Falkirk on October 29, 2023. The club reported that police officers and matchday staff were assaulted while responding to a situation involving a supporter. This action marks the latest chapter in an ongoing tension between the club and the Green Brigade, a group known for its vocal support and political displays.
According to a club statement, the incident occurred when a member of the matchday staff was assaulted during a routine ticket check. Two police officers intervened to arrest the individual responsible. In response, approximately 100 individuals from the Green Brigade allegedly participated in a “coordinated and orchestrated action” to rescue the individual in question. Many attempted to conceal their identities with hoods, scarves, and face coverings.
The club’s statement elaborated on the chaos that ensued, noting that the large group verbally abused and physically assaulted the police officers and steward involved. At one point, there was a risk of one officer being pulled to the ground and trampled amid the crowd. The club emphasized that this type of behavior is “completely unacceptable” and poses serious safety risks for staff and attendees alike.
Details of the Incident and Club Response
Celtic Football Club stated that this incident was not isolated. In July 2023, the club had issued a suspended sanction against the Green Brigade due to repeated safety and security breaches. The club provided this opportunity for the group to demonstrate cooperation in ensuring a safe environment at Celtic Park. However, following the recent events, the club confirmed that the sanction would now be enforced, taking effect from this weekend.
The club expressed its commitment to maintaining a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for all fans. A statement from Celtic read: “For our staff and police to be assaulted in this way is simply unacceptable. This was a serious and violent incident which cannot be accepted and the Club has no choice but to address this behaviour in the strongest terms.”
The ongoing friction between Celtic and the Green Brigade has often revolved around political banners and chants, including the recent “Sack the Board” slogans. The club’s leadership has faced scrutiny from supporters who demand changes in management. In light of this incident, Celtic is taking a firm stance to protect the integrity of matchday experiences.
The club has communicated directly with the Green Brigade and season ticket holders regarding the incident and the subsequent ban. Authorities are keen to ensure that Celtic Park remains a safe venue for all who attend matches.
As this situation develops, the focus will remain on the implications for both the Green Brigade and Celtic Football Club, particularly how the latter will navigate ongoing tensions with its supporters while upholding safety standards at their matches.
