Rare Lynx Confirmed in Piva Nature Park After Decade of Research
After ten years of field research and monitoring across Montenegro, the Centre for Protection and Study of Birds (CZIP) has officially confirmed the presence of the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) in Piva Nature Park. This discovery represents the first photographic evidence of the lynx in Montenegro, marking an important milestone in the long-term search for this elusive species and providing momentum for conservation efforts.
The quality of the captured image does not allow for the determination of the lynx’s sex, age, or subspecies. However, it unequivocally confirms the animal’s presence in this area. The finding in Piva is significant, reflecting the results of systematic research on this species throughout Montenegro. Prior sightings included a record from the Prokletije area in 2024, as well as a poached individual from 2002.
“During our last field days this year, while conducting lynx research in Piva Nature Park, we reviewed camera trap footage that revealed the presence of a lynx. This discovery is the result of over two years of continuous fieldwork in this protected area. After thorough verification from esteemed colleagues Dimeta Melovski and Igor Trbojević, experts on large cats and carnivores in the region, the finding has been officially confirmed,” stated Marija Iković, a carnivore specialist at CZIP.
Iković emphasized the significance of this data for Montenegro and the wider region, noting that it confirms the existence of one of the rarest and most endangered large carnivores in the country. “We believe that this confirmation opens the way for further research and ongoing activities aimed at the long-term protection of the lynx and its habitats,” she added.
The Eurasian lynx is the largest wild cat in Europe and one of the rarest and most endangered species in the region. As a strictly protected, highly territorial, and elusive species, its presence indicates well-preserved, functional habitats and stable ecosystems. As an apex predator, the lynx plays a crucial role in maintaining natural balance within its environment.
The research was conducted in collaboration with Piva Nature Park. “We are extremely pleased to have confirmed the presence of this species and proud to have participated in the research. This data proves that Piva is one of the most representative habitats in Montenegro,” remarked Ivan Doderović, director of Piva Nature Park.
The activities were carried out with the support of the EuroNatur Foundation as part of the regional Balkan Lynx Recovery Project, aimed at the long-term recovery of lynx populations in the Balkans. The confirmation of the lynx in Piva not only contributes to the region’s biodiversity but also enhances conservation strategies moving forward.
With ongoing efforts and collaboration among conservationists and local authorities, the hope is to ensure the survival and thriving of this magnificent species in its natural habitat.
