President Milatović Calls for Calm After Podgorica Attack
Montenegro’s President, Jakov Milatović, condemned a violent incident that occurred in Podgorica yesterday, expressing his support for the injured citizen and their family. He urged local authorities to ensure a swift and thorough investigation into the attack, while emphasizing the need for transparent communication with the public.
Call for Calm and Responsible Policy
In a message shared on the social media platform X, Milatović encouraged all citizens to remain calm and exercise restraint. He stated that collective blame and stigmatization of entire communities have no place in society, asserting, “It is our obligation to protect the safety of people, public order, and social cohesion.”
The President further highlighted the responsibility of public figures to avoid inflaming tensions through their messages. He called on law enforcement and the judiciary to actively combat hate speech and any forms of threats. This response is particularly crucial in light of recent events.
Need for a Fair Immigration Policy
Milatović also addressed the need for a responsible immigration policy, indicating that Montenegro requires a framework that is strict against abuses and crime while being fair to those who respect local laws. He stated, “This includes targeted security checks, effective sanctioning of illegalities, and stronger oversight against abuses, while also sending a clear message that those who live and work here legally are welcome and safe.”
He reminded the public that just a month ago, he had raised concerns regarding migration and the necessity for a clear, balanced, and responsible state policy in this area. “Unfortunately, there have been no concrete institutional steps taken to address these issues,” he remarked. Milatović asserted that the recent attack should prompt the government to shift from hasty decisions to more serious and sustainable measures that benefit all citizens.
In conclusion, the President emphasized that Montenegro must demonstrate maturity by upholding and enforcing its immigration laws without exception. He called for zero tolerance towards perpetrators, fairness towards all, and calmness in moments when it is easiest to escalate tensions.
